metalman
Went up the M1 today and in the 50 mph zones where they are installing the smart motorway and the new central barriers, I noticed lots of signs in the actual working areas saying that the speed limit for the works traffic was 11 mph. I just wondered why such an arbitrary figure was chosen? Anybody know?

Winemaster
It's used as an attention grabber as the limit doesn't end in a zero part of the highways safety for construction workers. Sometimes they use a 9 mph alternative just to keep them on there toes.
tinfoilhat
Does it convert to a more even number in kilometres?

metalman
Does it convert to a more even number in kilometres? Well, a kilometer's 5/8 of a mile so no, not really, about 7 km/h.
