Mister M
How would you feel if after finishing a temporary job on the minimum wage, the Department for Work & Pensions order you to work for the same company without pay. If you object to working for free you have your income support stopped, but see the enterprise that previously employed you on the minimum wage get taxpayers money? This is what happened to John McArthur: http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/nov/03/dwp-benefits-electrician-work-placement-labour#start-of-comments
Cyclone
They were breaking their own guidelines by "placing" him there in the first place 1.01 Community Work Placements (CWP) is aimed at those claimants whose primary barrier to work is a lack of work experience or motivation, and who may have spent a great deal of time away from a structured work environment. CWP aims to equip jobseekers with a valuable period of experience in a work-based environment, enabling them to develop the disciplines and skills associated with sustained employment, as well as to move them into employment. If he was previously working then he didn't fit these criteria, which are 1.01 of the guidelines (ie the first item).
taxman
Sounds like a nice source of free labour for the business. No wonder the government are fighting tooth and nail against naming the businesses involved.

Mister M
Just to clarify further - outsourcing companies such as A4E, SERCO etc are the ones that sanction people if they don't go on their CWPs. And of course, we all know that serco have great moral authority on matters to do with public finance....
ChrisG1983
Mister M - A4E/Serco dont sanction the benefit as they do not pay it in the first place, they have to provide evidence to JCP who have the final say whether a sanction is applied or not... The fact remains the employer is getting work done for free, while the taxpayer picks up the bill. Totally unacceptable and morally wrong.
