Office wear in the 1950s

Recommended Posts

About 1970 I was working at BISRA, Hoyle St. One day Pat Booth , secretary to Dr John Pearson the Director came to work in a trouser suit & was promptly told by him that trousers were not suitable work attire!!

I worked in offices from 1962 onwards. In the early day we girls and women wore nylon overalls to protect our clothes from inky typewriter ribbons and Gestetner copying machines (before photocopying existed).

I don't remember any of us wearing trousers to work, it was always skirts or dresses, court shoes and nylons. Men didn't wear overalls, but they had to wear a jacket, collar and tie.

................pity those standards are not adhered too today!! Men with no ties and jackets, women who look as though they are going to the beach (in the summer months!) the 'higher up' don't seem to notice! When I worked in a professional office, I always wore a suit, blouse and court shoes. Standards are not like they used to be.......more's the pity!!!
