Cyclone
I take on board your points ref alcohol but my concern about tobacco is the suffering it causes in later life. People are aware of the risks but still smoke including many young people. Adults should be free to make their own choices. If you take rat poison it will (very soon afterwards) have quite severe consequences for you. Does that mean we shouldn't sell rat poison? Or that ingesting it should be a crime? Magilla
So regulated alcohol as opposed to unregulated moonshine is "safer"? Yes, it'd be to suggest otherwise. Maybe "regulating" the contents will prevent the user from going blind .. or dying. There's no "maybe" about it. Regulation saves lives. but apart from that alcohol still presents a danger to the user as well as to the innocent victims of that user. If that's not the case why is the law so strict on DUI. In California an alcohol level over .008 can get a driver arrested Odd then, that alcohol is legal. Legalizing drugs and regulating the contents is no case at all. People will still abuse them, overdose etc. So how do you rationalise the sale of alcohol? Are you suggesting it should be illegal also? If drugs were sold legally in outlets like any other commodity what's to stop naïve young people from trying them out? Nothing, as is the case currently. People who would ordinarily not bother with them because at present they're not stuck under their noses. Possibly, though you have to say that in that case, where have all the drug users come from? Many such people would be too ready to believe that because the government passed a law to make them legal then therefore they must be okay to use. After all, the government knows everything don't it? Does everyone think cigarettes must be OK and cause no harm? Nope, so I don't believe that is the case. harvey19
And they always will do. It's a choice we are free to take. When most people become addicted to tobacco they are young and blase about it's effects, thinking the consequences will never happen to them. The effects can be dreadful illness from cancer, COPD, circulatory problems. ---------- Post added 24-11-2014 at 17:10 ---------- Adults should be free to make their own choices. If a person takes rat poison that is a misuse of the substance. There is no beneficial effect from smoking. The only pleasure is from relieving a craving. I don't know whether they can be called beneficial things, but smoking can be nice from time to time. Especially when you're trying to stop ---------- Post added 24-11-2014 at 17:42 ---------- Doughnuts are food, the body needs food. The point being made, is that doughnuts are bad for you, whether they are food or not. You can always have a salad, but every now and then you might crave a doughnut. The only pleasure is from relieving a craving. "Misuse" is not a legal term. So it's just "use". There is no beneficial effect, so what. Why does that mean that adults shouldn't have the personal freedom to do it? People do lots of stupid things, it's important that we are free to choose our own stupid things IMO. Halibut
How long until Cannabis is legal in the UK? Not long enough. What's up Korky? Why shouldn't those who want to get a bit stoned be able to do so?
