Nagel
I know they had a large and impressive factory on Wellington Street facing what is now Devonshire Green which was demolished in the late 1970s. There was a bit of fuss over it being demolished and I took some photos of it before it was knocked down: http://s13.photobucket.com/user/Alastairw/media/WostenholmeIXLWashingtonWorks1977.jpg.html ---------- Post added 29-11-2014 at 00:37 ---------- And here's a better picture of the Wostenholme IXL factory on the English Heritage site. Imagine if it had been kept and converted for other use, it would be an asset to the city: http://viewfinder.english-heritage.org.uk/search/detail.aspx?uid=15744 Edited November 29, 2014 by Nagel

Nagel
Wostenholme's made the famous Bowie knife which is one reason they are popular with American collectors. The founder, George Wostenholme made several trips to the USA to promote his knives there and the story is that the area of Nether Edge that he developed with large villas and tree lined streets was based on Boston, Massachusetts. His own house was Kenwood Hall, which is now a hotel.
