tzijlstra
http://www.ifs.org.uk/uploads/publications/budgets/as2014/as2014_johnson.pdf What George said and what the IFS are saying. Page 4: Europe's downfall as has been predicted by countless economists when discussing the post-war baby-boom that is now reaching pension age. What am I talking about? This sentence: The relatively modest fall [of total government spending] over this parliament is largely explained by increased spending on social security, especially pensions. PeteMorris
By all account it's also caused by lower than expected (dunno who expected it) tax receipts. Apparently all the jobs that have been created lately are all low paid jobs, which don't generate much tax revenue, and indeed can be a cost with tax credit topups. Did nobody think that a workforce on minimum wage and or zero hours contracts is all a bit pointless in terms of tax receipts?

PeteMorris
I wonder what percentage of people on ZHC actually pay tax That's just the point...probably not many....yet we hear all sorts of rhetoric about the unemployment rate being down....Blah blah...and effectively the result is, they're shooting themselves in the foot...because they're not getting tax revenues from these low paid workers. Wages are subsidised by tax credits and like ricgem2002 says, corporations are legally allowed to avoid paying their taxes.
