aliceBB
The thread question is too vague. In what context are we talking about [the operation/appropriateness of censorship]? And by whom? Censorship operates all the time to some degree - but what is censored and to what extent will vary depending on the culture and medium in which the material in question is being read/watched/spoken about. andrejuan
I have posted this before in another thread on the same subject. I think it was James Pickles who said. "Censorship is simply someone else looking at something and saying, this has not corrupted me, but I think it will corrupt you. So you are not allowed to see it." rodnreeluk
It's a funny one that, in theory it should be all of us or at least the majority. Hence we give the democratically elected government the power over censorship in order to maintain our societal norms and values. This I guess reflects in part what we should have learned as a society about the dangers of certain things - like letting people make bombs; as an extreme example. But then sometimes those norms need to be challenged say in the case of gay rights or universal suffrage. The problem with the government, or its nominees, acting as censors is that they can censor out what they don't want us to know, ie: their own misdeeds. Yes but I suppose that is a risk we take in order to have the government protect us and our society, as some want, by censoring things eg child porn. It's the reason we also need a strong responsible press and judiciary as well as ultimately a monarch to hold the government to account. ---------- Post added 13-12-2014 at 16:09 ---------- And in relation to what, I think, the OP was getting at, the same principles more or less hold on here. We all agree to take part in this online community and you need a set of rules to make it work but, you see on a few occasions where mods will 'trim' or even close threads in a way which often reflects their own bias. Xt500
Some stuff should be most definitely be censored, and anyone who disagrees is foolish or trolling. what stuff? If you dont want to see something you have a choice. What makes you think you should push your views on others?

Seriously, engage your brain just for a moment. There's a lot of stuff that should be censured, pedophilia for example.

dosxuk
You mean the fake ones? Doesn't matter if some are fake, the aftermath is the same, besides there's enough verifiable beheadings around anyway. Do you think that there would be no negative consequences of showing children those videos?
JFKvsNixon
You mean the fake ones? Do you allow your children to watch whatever they like to on the internet, or do you censor what they are allowed watch?
