School playing fields sold off

Ah, that old chestnut. Aside from this story:

More than 200 playing fields sold off under Labour, Government figures show

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/5933728/More-than-200-playing-fields-sold-off-under-Labour-Government-figures-show.html

There's a thread on here where I found out that at least one of the playing fields that was sold under the Tories regime, was from a school that was closed down under Labour and been left abandoned for years.

You seem to contradict yourself by posting the link and I can't remember bringing party politics into the issue, perhaps it's thrown in there as a red herring because you really know in your own mind that there are lots of things that £100,000 can be better invested in, can you imagine the furore if the council had been asked and then agreed to invest when the next round of cuts and job losses were announced?

I would argue that the event shouldn't go to Sheffield each year for the sake of the event, Yorkshire is a fairly big place we should be show casing all of it not just Leeds, Sheffield and York.

The Grand Prix cycling event is for the second and third rank UCI Continental and British elite teams. Some of the riders are semi-professional, to make a football comparison these riders are on a par with Accrington Stanley and Rotherham United while the World Tour teams racing in Tour of Yorkshire are Real Madrid and Chelsea. You wouldn't judge the popularity of Real Madrid by the attendance at Rotherham United, no one would take you seriously if you did.

That's fair enough - it's just with the hysteria last July, there was this event in the City Centre that same month which closed a number of roads there, and yet it seemed no-one cared... so therefore, the council may have thought this golden egg of the TdF may just be a one off, and frittering cash on a TdY would not go down well, especially in a General Election year...

The city centre was packed for the event.

100,000 is peanuts compare to 6,500,000 it cost to host tdf. what did the average sheffielder get out of it. nothing

only shop and business benefit, so why should we all contribute to it?

So should the council (or government for that matter) only support things that everyone directly benefits from/uses? Because nothing will be supported if that spurious reasoning was used.

By the way the average Sheffielder got the opportunity to watch one of the world's top sporting events for free in a fantastically friendly atmosphere.

Stand for a an hour or 2 to see 5 minutes of bike going past you, not knowing the result or updates. those people have nothing better to do

We watched the riders on an iPad as we waited, so we knew exactly what going on. We met loads of really nice people and enjoyed the carnival atmosphere which made for a great day out.

Just because something is of no interest to you, do not arrogantly assume that the blinkered and ignorant view you hold is held by others. The vast crowds having a absolute ball all that weekend in Yorkshire, shows you are talking out of your fundament.

A lot of Sheffielders got a once in a lifetime chance to watch one of the world's greatest sporting event.

Now what was the last comparable event to take place in Rotherham?

The Grand Prix has run for the last three years and will run again this year. I doubt the success or otherwise would have any bearings on whether the World Tour riders raced through Sheffield as discussed already it's an entirely different prospect. As for elections you'd expect politicians would want to jump on the coattails of an event that created an enormous amount of excitement and goodwill across Yorkshire, but in any case the people of Sheffield have proven time and again that local decisions make little difference as to how they vote.
