James Corden OBE?

Recommended Posts

Yes, it's that time of year again, where the rich award themselves gongs whilst the unknown, hardworking and undervalued charity workers are rarely ever heard of let alone get any sort of recognition for their graft. So much for Cameron’s “Big Society”

I notice that Fiona Woolf is honoured for services to the establishment by derailing the inquiry into child sex abuse. The award could hardly be for services to the legal profession when she couldn't spot a conflict of interest that a first year law student would have spotted with ease.

I have to agree with you Mecky, the honours system is a joke. There seems to be no real rhyme or reason to who gets one. It's just a form of favouritism / croneyism.

There's always a smattering of a few ordinary people, much publicised, to keep the proles happy, and usually a token Lollipop lady to show us that even the most humble can get awards too.... but the vast majority of Gongs, and certainly Knighthoods, go to civil servants (whom we've never heard of,) for just doing their job - for which they are already very well paid. And to push a few unelected, chosen people into the House of Lords.

I notice Gary Verity, who brought the Tour de France to Yorkshire, didn't get a mention, and if we're going to have awards, what about, say, Ken Dodd, who's spent a lifetime bringing happiness to people?

Why don't you actually bother to have a look at the list and see exactly what some of these people do. Far more than "civil servants doing their job"

There are leaders of industry, charity heads, head teachers, nurses, care workers, voluntary workers, writers, campaigners, leading actors and doctors. OK, a few of these gongs are a little bit token no doubt. But what about the hundreds of others. Why the hell shouldn't a senior doctor who has spent years dedicated to a specialist field or a teacher who has dedicated their career to turning round a failing school or a business leader who has built up their wealth and developed a start up into a multi-million company deserve some recognition.

If you were in with a shot of getting on the list would you still protest about it in the same way?? The biggest critics are usually the ones who want it most.
