Solomon1
Hi Everyone Am wondering if any of you have heard of the concept 'Contributionism'? "The moneyless Ubuntu Contribution system is an adaptation of ancient tribal customs and is not based on barter or trade since barter and trading is just another form of money. Everything needed is available to everyone at all times. Hoarding or accumulating stuff and planning for old age is simply unnecessary" http://www.ubuntuusa.com/philosophy.html I LOVE this idea....but in a post Thatcher Britain where everyone thinks mostly of themselves (apart from Sheffield where there is still a large sense of community )....is it something we could all work towards? chem1st
Interesting, not sure it would work in practice though, be nice if it could.
Mister M
I seem to recall Sheffield having a system to supplement the money system: http://www.sheffieldlets.org.uk/

Hot As Sun
The usual snag with ideas like this is, like it or not, most peoples true motivation, whether consciously or unconsciously, for creation and innovation, is to raise themselves up financially and I suppose socially. If you take that away society will eventually stagnate.

What about tribal people who have existed like this for millennia? and I suppose socially. If you take that away society will eventually stagnate Why? Hot As Sun
In YOUR experience of living in Britain today... What about tribal people who have existed like this for millennia? Why? Someone has become very rich from the creation and selling of the device you're using to post on here with; you can bet that personal enrichment played no small part in his hard work in doing so. Where would his motivation have come from in a contributionist society?

Solomon1
We used to live for millenia in small tribes of hunter gatherers - how is that possible in todays society? Why do you think it is not possible to live in a system, other than the one we're in now? We have no choice, we are going to have to find a way of living that is sustainable - as our current system isn't
