pauliepaul
Hi all, Myself and a friend are making a film about the role of the banksman/dogger in the steel works. Some of you very kindly responded earlier in the year on here - providing us with lots of information on this subject. We would now like to talk to someone who used to do this job - so if you were a banksman/dogger or know someone who was and would be happy to talk to us, could you please get in touch? It would be great to hear from anyone with a 'lead' on this. Any connections/contacts gratefully received. Best Wishes and Happy New Year! spider1
A banksman could be a person who worked with excavation gang digging trenches etc in the building trade. His job would be to look out or after driver of hymack digging holes to make sure they didnt dig up any unseen pipes / draines / cables etc ./ A drivers look out who would be mainily down trench a very important job. RJRB
I think that a banksman would work on the "cooling banks" of a rolling mill ,where the hot rolled sections would be held and turned during the cooling process.
pauliepaul
Thank you spider and RJRB. I think that the type of banksman that I am referring to signalled to crane drivers using specific hand movements...
rossyrooney
You can usually spot the banksman by the fact he will be wearing different coloured PPE to everyone around him
RJRB
According to HSE,banksmen are traffic marshalls supervising movement of vehicles. Those supervising safe crane lifts by standard procedures including hand signals are signal men,or the term that I was more used to in Sheffield steelworks...."slingers"
pauliepaul
Thanks Rossy - what is/are PPE? ---------- Post added 30-12-2014 at 14:29 ---------- Hi RJRB, Thanks. Ye, I've heard that term -it sounds like we are looking for slingers then...
