Shipping disasters. Is it me? or do they appear 'top heavy'?

Aren't the cranes partially computer driven now tho as well?

Well I'm not sure...maybe there is some element of computer assistance, but the reporter on the news this morning was saying he'd been told that new drivers (crane) tend to be a bit 'jerky' when they start, but soon get the hang of it.

The vast majority of container traffic is computer controlled from sending to delivering.

Just imagine the time lost and mistakes made by people.

These mixed traffic ships will travel along pre advertised routes planned a years in advance. When a container is booked to go from A to B the customer uses a Shipping agent will look at an international brokerage database. The broker will have had instructions on time/cost. The program selects the ship and will pass on the data to the port and ships' computer.

On arrival at the departure port gate the lorry driver will follow the directions produced by the port computer.

The automatic/semiautomatic/manual loading cranes will follow the computers instructions.

The computer will have selected a space beforehand. Not randomly but based on destination, weight and efficient loading and unloading.

On arrival each crane will be told where each container and the order they will be removed.

Again lorries will be told by computer.

Car transportation is very different.

The reason you see so many cars at Grimsby is because they are waiting to leave or to be picked up from chartered specialist ships.
