woggle
They are quite strict now, I went with a group of people and one of them was refused entry on the application and it was only a minor offence.

alternageek
Snaily, the US gov't will need to review the details of the reasons for the criminal activity to decide if it is okay for them to enter. ESTA for my people with a criminal record of any kind is not an option. I know of a few people who couldnt travel - even after a spent convictions on daft things. AMR67
Britain operates a Visa Waiver scheme with the U.S. as long as you haven't been arrested. As Shepcanon says if you have a criminal record you can apply for a Visa, or possibly a restricted Visa, but it will mean a visit to, and an interview at the U.S. embassy in London. Please be aware that if you go down this route it can takes months to process.
