Post office rip off

Recommended Posts

Just to let people be aware of the postal rip off.

We had 2 "can't deliver your letter as there is insufficient postage."

1 is a birthday card, the other a DVD in a case in an envelope.

The birthday card required an extra 20p + £1 handling charge.Upon questioning the counter assistant at Pit Lane sorting office why this wasn't delivered the assistant said because there is a badge in the corner and wouldn't fit in their measurement of a letterbox.

The DVD required 11p extra + £1 handling charge. This had been taken to the post office and weighed however the assistant said staff at post offices don't check if they will the measuring letterbox.

By going to the post office the 2 people thought they had done the right thing.

A complaint has been made and I am awaiting their response.

Where is the scam here, please?

I'm presuming that the rip off is that if you take a parcel into the post office and they give you a price to deliver an item, you would hope they would honour it.

They shouldn't be asking the recipient to pay extra because they have miscalculated the cost or failed to take the dimensions of the package into account. This is before you consider the £1 administration charge.

If you calculate the postage yourself and print off a prepaid label and it's incorrect that's a different matter.

In which case it's probably a staff training issue and nothing a complaint would sort out, it certainly isn't a "scam" though as the OP originally claimed.

Yes, I agree. It wouldn't be worth the Royal Mail or parcelforce's reputation to rip customers off for a pound. It's probably due to the fact that the role of post office staff has changed.

What about the "unauthorised personal loans" they give you for parcels incoming from overseas then charge you £8 for the privilege whilst making you go get your parcel from the depot?

Ordered something from the states and it had a customs instructions option on the delivery slip for customs to call recipient should any taxes be due.

RM took it upon themselves to pay the taxes, fail to deliver the item and demand reimbursement plus £8 "handling".
