Re home a dog from animal sanctuary

We explained on the phone that my mum would nip round to let it out but they said people can let you down. So my mum coming round was not good enough. That's when we gave up on them and got a pup.

 

Maybe they had other reason then because lots of dogs are re-homes to people who work full time. Only they could give you the explanation but that's certainly not a reason for a definite no.

I agree that if you can't afford a dog then you can't afford vets fees applies if you are working but as the person wanting it has retired they can probably take dog to PDSA for most things apart from vaccinations and I've just looked at Rain rescues site and they do charge £250 which includes vaccinations, neutering etc but the neutering can be done free at some vets

 

It depends which adoption package the dog is on at rain rescue, some are adopted with no charge, some £100, some £200+....each dog of theirs is different and the individual write ups explain why.

I can't think of any other reason they would have said no. I told them the amounts of walk I take my other dog on I also told them the dog would be insured and that it would not be kept in a cage.

we got our rescue dog from R.A.D.A.R . they have a charity shop at wombwell .we paid £120 for him .he had all innoculations etc . its a small charity run by wonderful volunteers .they are on facebook with pics andinfo of current dogs available

How much does it cost?

 

Each dog has a rehoming package with a rehoming fee. This fee goes towards the running cost of the whole centre and not just for that one dog as most cost much more than the fee we ask. Rehoming fees are non refundable. In circumstances where it is in the best interests of the dog to be returned to Rain Rescue the adoption fee may be refunded less a charge of £25.00. We have put a lot of time and effort into your rehoming and this just gives a small amount back to the rescue for the time it has taken. We want this relationship to work. The dog is the one that suffers the most if it gets brought back to kennels.

 

We CANNOT guarantee any of the dogs that we rehome. We do behavioural assessments with them all the time they are in our care and can tell you what we have seen whilst they have been with us. However, dogs may and will react differently to other people, other pets (resident dogs or cats) or strangers dog or cats once they are rehomed with you. It does take time for things to settle and also takes training. We ask that you help them to understand your rules. The dog didn’t know what these rules were before he joined you. He isn’t your last dog, he doesn’t know your special commands or words but he will try as hard as he can to understand you.

 

Be aware, that we very rarely have any history on a dog before it comes to us and can only advise of what they are like based on their time here in our care. Often these behaviours can change once the pet arrives into a home environment but it will also react to how you are with it – people expect so much of them.

 

We ask you to think long and hard before taking on any pet. We feel that its a lifetime commitment and it is unfair to take on a pet thinking you can exchange, swap or return when your circumstances are not suitable. We ask you to consider your lifestyle and plan that you are taking on this commitment for the rest of its natural life.

Nowhere does it say you get a reduction unless you can't afford vets fees in which case you may get reduction and certain medications such as heart tablets free and you may get an older dog free

Still think the charge is a bit steep maybe that's why they struggle to re home pets

@lien1: Can you say what you feel is a reasonable sum of money to pay for a rescue dog? If you could post back with this information, perhaps there is a rescue who might be able to help if they have a dog that fits your price range. Did you take the elderly gentleman along with you and have you discussed the fee with him? If you did, what are his views on the price?

 

As has been said, taking into account the cost of vaccinations (circa £25 each and the dog would need at least two so that comes to £50 minimum), neutering (roughly £90 male/£150 female), worming and flea treatment, I would call it a bargain but then we all have different ideas on this.

 

It may be that you don't understand about the hard work and expense that goes into rescuing these dogs, let alone the voluntary work that is needed to raise money. These people work tirelessly and I would imagine that it is disappointing for them to receive messages like your own, complaining of the cost of a dog. That's not your fault but maybe if you studied it all a bit more you would then see why rescues have to charge for the dogs. They are not in it for gain. I hope that your friend eventually gets a suitable new four legged companion.

We paid somewhere between £600 - £800 for our rescue Shepherd. Granted the dog was just over a year old so hopefully we will have him for many years to come. The person that rescued him looks after dogs for a living. He cared for, trained and assessed the dog for two months before we had him. People have to cover their costs and make a living. The pup we bought off the same person for £500 less than a year before cost much more than that when you consider the cost of spaying etc.

I am confused about this thread and know that the person certainly hasn't contacted Rain Rescue as I have manned the phone today. We don't take applications over the phone either and the person interested - or a very close friend/relative would have to complete a form with them ensuring that the new owner was the one answering the questions - even if they had someone to help them For us, this works ok.

 

On average we have a rehoming fee of £200 - however, some will be more than that and some will be less. Many of our dogs will go for a minimum fee, some will even go for free if we know its a good home, and they can afford on-going care but can't afford a price.

 

Yes, you can go and get a dog from the internet, but I can guarantee that we get a call every single day from someone who has bought a dog of the net, and somehow they aren't the right match for the dog and so blame the previous owner, blame the dog (the dog always get the blame) or blame circumstances - somehow never blame themselves for lack of research or time or basic research into what they require.

 

A rehoming with our rescue can take hours - both before you get to meet a dog and at the actual meet up - even then - we may not have a dog right and ask that people keep checking the site for something that seems a good fit for them. For us, it has to be right for the new home but also for the dog. We haven't done our job right if we haven't found them both a good fit - albeit all have to work on having to invest time on a settling in period and then get behavioural help if need be as long as most is right - you just need help them settling in.

 

Blame rescue centres all you like, they are trying to help dogs in need because soon there will be no rescue centres to blame due to the public throwing so many dogs out and so few people wanting to give them a chance. Rescue centres are just a pawn in the process.

 

The old chestnut about working hours - you have to do right by the dog - rescue centres get dogs thrown at them all the time that people can't keep due to their 'change in working hours' - so what do you think we should do - rehome the poor dog again to someone who can't work round getting it sorted.

 

We can never get it right for everyone - but you know what - if people care and invest the time, they will make it work. We hope they are the ones that own a dog responsibly. Personally I would look at your requirements - then decide how you and a dog can be a great home.
