Will we ever know the meaning of life?

Recommended Posts

Eventually, yes, we are, but that answer is simply a descriptor, not an explanation, and refers to what we become after death, not what it 'means' to be alive.

The thread question also assumes that there is only ONE 'meaning of life' when it is possible to argue that it is variable rather than constant. The problem is that we are trying to pin down something objective, but with our present understanding it can only be subjective.

Was the meaning of Michael Jackson's life the same as the meaning of Gandhi's, or of Saddam Hussein's?

They all chose a destructive path, so yes.

This is from another thread that got a bit derailed by the topic. Thought I'd start a fresh one.

Whether you're religious or and atheist (like me), it's impossible to say for sure that theirs no such thing as a god or divine creator.

The question posed in the title presupposes that there is a meaning.

Personally I doubt that there is and so the question itself is meaningless.

There are over 8 million life forms on earth, these life forms represent less that 1% of the life that as existed on earth, there are 100 billion stars in our galaxy and 200 billion in the visible universe. So if you want to discus the meaning of life you would surely want to include all life and not just one insignificant life form, we are not even the most important life form in our tiny bit of the universe.

There's no evidence that life exists other than on this planet though, so unless we want to discuss the meaning of stars, we should probably concentrate on earth.

Because it's impossible to transmit information through the singularity. It therefore doesnt matter what went on before - it could be anything - and we have no way of veryifying anyway - as no information can be transmitted.

Don't you mean that as far as we know it is 'it's impossible to transmit information through the singularity'

How do we know if anyone has tried or if it's possible to send information around a singularity or via other dimensions?

Surely when you are trying to dicuss origins of the universe, life and its meaning or who can and who can not do what, then you need to be at least a little open minded.

There is no proof that life exists on other worlds, but there is evidence that life is very likley to be abundant throughout the universe.

Not intelligent life though. The series of events that earth has gone through to lead to the existence of humans is quite extensive.

Yes it is very likley that intelligent life is abundant throughout the universe, its also very likley that more advanced civilizations than ours have long since vanished.

People can give a meaning to their life I guess- obviously those who have a religious outlook see things with an ultimate objective, but I think we as humans should be at least accommodating to one another.

Even if you don't believe in anything post death, making things better while you're here is always a good thing-whether that is uniting people, fighting racism, helping those less unfortunate etc..I rather be remembered for something positive than something negative.
