Frank Roper, motorcycle dealer, London Rd.

Recommended Posts

dad bought a nsu quickiey 50/cc with pedals to help up the hills ,from ropers, i think they were the agent for them...........

At age 16 my first bike was an NSU Quickly early in 1960! :)

My dad took me to buy it, I think from Armando's off London Road. It was second hand and maybe taken in part exchange. Seems to make sence, from your comment, that he may have taken a trade in off nearby Ropers' hands. I didn't have it long as was knocked off it by a car on Firth Park roundabout on Whit Monday. I was given a ride to Northern General in a blue ambulance with bell. I still have the scars and the bike was written off. As soon as I recovered I bought an Alpino scooter from Bill Beevers at Page Hall. My new Lambretta TV175 series 2 came the following year from Wragg's, but I bought a new helmet and jacket from Ropers. Those were the days. :)

has anyone worked for frank b roper [motorcycle dealers ] london road

Never worked for Ropers.. but looking back..one of their staff must have drawn the short straw and was probably absolutely terrified !! Back in 1963 (approx) my family bought a new Reliant 3 wheeler. We had the reverse gear blanked off.. then it could be driven on a motorcycle license..that being .. myself and my dad. The purchase included a free driving lesson ! this meant the poor salesman going out with us both.. for the tuition.. we had never driven before.

I don't recall any mishaps.. but the guy must have gone home a trembling wreck !!

Hi - I worked for Ropers on London Road in the parts department(or Spares dept.as it was called then). I was there from leaving school in 1965 to joining Kennings Leadmill road in 1968.I remember the older staff there saying that 'these jap bikes will never catch on'. How wrong can you be?
