Guest sibon
Since when has snivelling been an entrance requirement for university? Other than Oxbridge, of course ---------- Post added 07-02-2015 at 23:12 ---------- Absolutely. But there is no reason to make them learn the 11x and 12x by heart since the chance of them being required in everyday life is negligible. Let them learn by rote facts which will be useful. I don't use my seven times table that often. I'm pretty sure that I use my 16 times table much more that my seven times. That is probably just a function of my job though. Learning things by heart is good for the mind.

Guest sibon
Why - what do you do? Herd sheep, or what?! I'm a Chemist. What things, though? Anything will do. FA Cup winners, irregular French verbs, valencies of common ions, sixteen times table. All good for the mind.
aliceBB
I'm a Chemist. I still can't think why the 16 times table would be so much use to you. Please explain! ---------- Post added 08-02-2015 at 00:45 ---------- Anything will do. FA Cup winners, irregular French verbs, valencies of common ions, sixteen times table. All good for the mind. Now you're onto something. I agree! I'd add : Recipes for 5 minute, nutritionally balanced meals Significant facts about assured shorthold tenancies Essential facts about contraceptive methods Any 10 poems of your choice The capital cities of as many countries as possible
Guest sibon
I still can't think why the 16 times table would be so much use to you. Please explain! Oxygen has a mass of 16 and occurs in many compounds in differing proportions. Isn't it odd how seemingly insignificant things are important to some. Hence my claim that the very act of memorising is a very important skill, regardless of the content. Your life as a teacher must have brought you into contact with loads of youngsters who didn't know how to remember things. ---------- Post added 07-02-2015 at 23:47 ---------- Now you're onto something. go4it
Absolutely. But there is no reason to make them learn the 11x and 12x by heart since the chance of them being required in everyday life is negligible. Let them learn by rote facts which will be useful. Totally missed the point. 11 and 12s are useful. Any number calculations which children have to do in their heads are useful. But the whole point is that it is a challenge for pupils to learn them. They then plan how to learn them, and is a challenge to achieve full marks on tests. This process can then be applied to other things aside from Maths which they wish to learn. Rote has its place, and the tree hugging left try to banish it because they believe that children thinking is somehow damaging to their brain. Look at the targets set - times tables, read a book, write a story - simple tasks which 8 year olds could do if taught correctly. Yet people are up in arms about it, asking why there is a need for it! ---------- Post added 08-02-2015 at 12:46 ---------- Oxygen has a mass of 16 and occurs in many compounds in differing proportions. The 16 times table teaches them to do multiple calculations in their head. 16 x 7 Work at 10 x 7 first, then 6 x 7, then add together The skill here is holding the first number in their head, whilst working out the second. Or, you can just remember that 16x7 is 112. Not difficult to do.
