A rat, or something else?

Recommended Posts

Around 4pm this evening while in queuing traffic on Penistone Road, about 50 yds from the junction with Leppings Lane, I saw what I assumed to be a rat, but it didn't look quite right so I'm not sure.

It was on the pavement, then ambled into the undergrowth, but didn't looked scared / stressed. It was a rich brown colour. It looked bigger than any rat I've ever seen before (although it's hard to judge size without something else to compare it with), but the main difference was it's shape. It was much heavier at the rear than rats normally are.

Was it just an overweight rat or could there possibly be something else that I saw? Any ideas, anyone?

That was a Rat alright, I've seen similar on the grassy area that runs part of the way down St Mary's Rd.

Coypu? :)

I saw one last year in a field in France. Like an oversized fat Guinea Pig.

My first thought when I saw it was guinea pig, from its stance. But again, it looked too big. It was only when it moved that I saw its long tail. What also stood out was the way it moved. It seemed to shuffle, not what I would call a typical rat type of movement. It just looked too fat, especially around the rear.
