Bonzo77
How many poor people get declared bankrupt (often because they overspent on luxuries they couldn't afford) and have to pay back the enormous amount of 1£ per month on a £5,000 debt? Probably loads. Do those people get to keep their fortune in the process and are those people committing a crime by buying stuff on finance, then falling behind on payments? Baring in mind the people that sell the goods have the means to check their customers on affordability before they buy the stuff?

The only reason they are there is because some people are stupid enough to borrow money they cannot afford. Its protection for the lenders. It also acts as veil of secrecy meaning lenders can refuse on any grounds and use it as an excuse.

Anyone should be able to take any amount of credit, as long as they think they can afford to pay it back? ---------- Post added 24-02-2015 at 09:52 ---------- America / Britain. $ / £ . there you go blurring the lines again Where are the blurred lines Ron? A gave a good example of how a rich criminal is treat totally differently to a poor one. Just because it's in the US doesn't make it invalid. Anna B
America / Britain. $ / £ . there you go blurring the lines again We live in a global economy, such examples are equally relevant over here. No blurring at all.
RonJeremy
We live in a global economy, such examples are equally relevant over here. No blurring at all. No. The thread is about benefits in Britain. And the UK economy. The poster was using an example of an American who went to jail 20 years ago for tax EVASION. Bringing that into the mix to confuse people who may think it was recent because of a very entertaining recent movie is disingenuous. It blurs the lines (no pun intended). He went to prison for fraud, not tax evasion. It wasn't brought into the mix to confuse anyone. It was brought into the mix to illustrate how wealthy people are not treat the same as poor people in the messed up financial world we are living in today. He was wealthy and he went to prison. So did Lester Piggott, so did Bernie Madoff. They were wealthy they went to prison. You have no point. RonJeremy
And how many have not gone to prison and got off scott free? No Idea - have you? I will demand the names of every "non-wealthy" person who has gone to prison if you are going to prove the point  I've stuck a couple of bananas in there for good measure
the_bloke
And how many have not gone to prison and got off scott free? You can ask that about any crime that you have strong feelings for; theft, burglary, speeding, shoplifting etc etc. Plenty of people with no money seem to 'get off scott free' from those too.
