taxman
The Conservatives are considering limiting child benefit to three children, BBC Newsnight has learned. The Treasury is "softening" to the idea and is examining the details, Newsnight political editor Allegra Stratton said. It would save an estimated £300m a year - but Tory MP Dominic Raab said it was not purely about cost but could "send a message about personal responsibility". Is Child Benefit ever a consideration for those having children? Genuine question.

Harrystottle
I'm surprised it will only save £300 million. Yes, it seems reasonable.

taxman
No dissenting voices yet. Anybody out there who thinks this "picks on" large families as Labour's Anne Begg claims?
Berberis
No dissenting voices yet. Anybody out there who thinks this "picks on" large families as Labour's Anne Begg claims? Not really as it would always be phased in so as not to overly effect people already claiming.
Mr Bloom
If it is for families with more than three children born after a date in the future - eg 9 months and a week from the date announced! then I am not entirely opposed. If it is going to affect existing families with more than three children, then it is a moral outrage, and children's charities should be shouting from the rooftops in opposition. Would this affect other benefits too? Like claiming benefits for dependants? ALSO, there MUST be in-built protection for children of multiple births. Do you know that the £500 that the government gives (or gave?) to new borns had to SHARED between siblings of multiple birth? THIS is outrageous!!! Cyclone
I'm surprised it will only save £300 million. Yes, it seems reasonable. You think there are many families with four or more children? Despite the average being <2... I think the idea is sound in principle, but you always come back to the concept of it ultimately punishing the children, who didn't get a choice about being born, so difficult to morally justify IMO.
