Car Culture? (Or just car stuff in general)

I have an update!

The now off-white Merc SLS has finally (!) moved off the drive, as has either the Jaguar or the Aston Martin. . . and have been replaced with a Range Rover Evoque type thing.

Probably necessary when Winter sets in, but we're still heading into summer. . .

Another update!

The Evoque has moved, leaving only the Nissan GTR and the Aston Martin on the drive.

Is another supercar on the way?

Weeds have grown on the drive where they've been parked for the best part of a year or more, which gives some indication as to how long they've been left there. What a waste of horsepower (not to mention the deprecation).

Well, Cyclone's about 4 years behind the times, as sadly, Fiat stoppped making Multiplas with bumps in 2011.

Bit of a Marmite vehicle, I guess...but I think they are a welcome antidote to all the willy-wavers' 9 million horse power machines. We had one (yes, with the bumps! Oh, how I miss it) when our kids were small. It was brilliant. Three proper seats at the front and at the back - we could go out as a family and still have room for Grandma or a friend...or separate three squabbling infants on long journeys so that nobody could poke a pencil up anyone else's nose. Now that's good design!

We don't have the squabbling infants problem any more, but I use it as my decorator's van (back seats removed and the exterior suitably embossed with my business signage) and it's fantastic - roomy, reliable, economical and quirky. Lots of people notice it and it's the only advert I need.

Utility does not equal beauty.

I like crappy old VWs if you couldn't guess!

I have a mk2 golf GTI, my baby. He's not on the road much at the moment though due to various running issues and a distinct lack of funds :(

If I ever see other mk2s/mk1s or other hot german cars from the era I always give them a wave!

I think it's safe to say the Multipla has been truly and comprehensively supplanted by Nissan's Joke Juke in the ugly stakes. Particularly in that shade of dark-ish yellow that seems to do the rounds atm.

It's not a supercar, or particularly fast and, as car culture goes, MX-5s are very much a small subset or sub-culture...but I'm going to enjoy my commute very much this week :)

I'm fascinated to know what you lot think makes a car beautiful (or not).

Do explain.

It's very idiosyncratic, and personal.

For me, it's a question of balance and purity of the design hand-in-hand with the purpose/utility of the car.

A car doesn't have to be low, aggressive, stanced, blingy or festooned in wings, scoops and bits of plastic. e.g. I find the 2CV (the original 1940s one) a beautiful car, even though -by modern standards- it looks like it would be designed by a trainee IKEA designer...or a 3 year old :D

Likewise, talk about marmite, I loved Imprezas (had 3: 97P 'classic', 55 bug eye, 06 hawkeye), but the veering to hatchback in '09 (IIRC) was a complete "urgh" moment. Never could stomach the Forresters and Legacies, then or now. I like some Astons (DB7), but not others (One-77...batmobile!), some Ferraris (365, F355, GTO) but not others (any of their new and 'angular' models or the 575), some Porsches (any 911, 928, early boxsters (Gen 1- Gen 2)), but not others (Cayenne, any model (especially the latest - what were they thinking with those front scoops!), and still a bit meh about the Cayman).

It's hard to put into words, really :)
