Is social media making people less sociable?

Recommended Posts

Actually there was a study into self esteem and facebook use.

You should look it up. Might learn something and be less ignorant.

You know of course that in a debate you're supposed to provide the evidence to support your assertions, not mock others for not having read an obscure study... Perhaps with better social skills...

Did you mean this one though?

It can "amplify" not create.

So I'll repeat, that's probably more about your friends than it is about facebook.

I particularly like this paragraph

In theory, the social networking website Facebook could be great for people with low self-esteem. Sharing is important for improving friendships. But in practice, people with low self-esteem seem to behave counterproductively, bombarding their friends with negative tidbits about their lives and making themselves less likeable

I certainly think Facebook is linked to low self esteem, as see a lot of people looking to post for validation from other people. 'Fishing' for comments.

Ergo, you have a lot of "friends" with low self esteem.

Facebook didn't create that low self esteem though.

:huh:So this social media forum that you are socializing on isn't a social media platform.

Could you educate us as to the specific differences?

No mate. Social media refers to twitter, linkedin, facebook, pinterest etc etc.

Sheff forum is a forum. The diff is this is a php forum on a certain topic or theme.

I suppose you could argue its all social. But then again if using that argument why not throw the entire internet in the hat.

This thread is never going to have a balanced argument - going on a social media platform (and I reckon SF is SM) and asking whether social media has negative impacts.

Much like going on a car forum and asking if the car is the devil's work

It wasnt intented to be aimed at sheffforum. Because the forum isnt 'social media'.

Its a community forum, php bb. It has a social elememt. But thats it. So to loads of other sites. Blogs, web 2.0 etc.

Otherwise we could class all forums as 'social media'. Even car forums!

I suggest you look up Tim Berners-Lee on Web 2.0.

What is a forum if not a medium for social interaction?

Stating the obvious isn't trolling buddy, it is stating the obvious. You haven't got a clue what you are talking about. I'd like to know which "social forum" (your own words) you used to "co-run", I am going to file it under the category "big claims from ubermaus when pushed to think about his OP" until then.
