Queen may face industrial action or the first time.

What do you mean "as little" as £14000. Its around 1300 more a year than the NMW. Many of the staff at the palace are nothing more than glorified waiters, cleaners, housekeepers, retail, catering and grounds staff. Why would you expect them to earn anything more than their equivalent outside of the palace.

I am completely unsurprised that many are on zero hours. I would assume that many of the staff will simply not be required full time. A state banquet or ambassador's reception is not going to every single day of the week and thus there will be peaks and troughs in requirements.

Seems like another RT conspiracy theory. Somehow just because they work for the Queen they are somehow supposed to be treated differently. Staff are staff. A silver service waiter for the Royals will be the same as any other silver service waiter in any other restaurant or hotel. The tour staff and shop assistants will hardly need to be paid any premium over their counterparts down the road.

This constant guff about the non existant "Living Wage" is becoming tiresome. What the hell is a bloody living wage. People "live" on anything from £12k a year to £200k+ a year. Their "lifestyle" and ability to purchase things is adjusted up and down accordingly. If you have a little money you buy and have less. If you have a lot of money you have more and spend more. Its how people have lived for centuries.

Union have invented this concept all on their own. Its ridiculous.

Non story alert.

RT conspiracy theory?

Not to mention the I originally saw the story on BBC TV.

Why do you think it's acceptable for cleaners and/or waters etc. to not be paid a living wage? They're important industries with long, unsociable hours. Those people work incredibly hard. You'd think they would be paid well, especially when the person who employs them is one of the richest women in the world, who lives on public hand outs.

Do you consider the union boss Mark Serwotka is worth £126k salary per year ?

He is head of the Union the people being balloted belong to.

Is anyone worth their salary?

I certainly don't think he's worth that. Union membership/leadership should be voluntary and free of charge in my opinion.

That doesn't change the fact that I think unions are vastly important.

How much is this "living wage"? What a lot of nonsense.

The minimum average salary that someone needs to put a roof over their head and food on the table. Not much to ask for really, especially when you're working MUCH harder than your boss has ever worked.......ever.

I once remember (not too long ago) seeing an advert where the royal household wanted a (I forget the title actually used) person to clean and maintain all of the clocks in the royal household, I think it was over 3 sites. bearing in mind, some of the clocks there are worth a hell of a lot of money. You were responsible for making sure they always showed the correct time...Cleaning them (including the mechanics inside)...and turning them forward or back wards as the season changed. Servicing them at appropriate intervals. I seem to remember there were hundreds of them.

The pay for these services was a pittance (for such responsibility) and you had to have your own transport to travel from site to site. I remember at the time, being very shocked and appalled in how little the pay was.

Many of the Queens staff are paid as little as £14,000 a year and are also on zero hours contracts.

One of the richest women in the world, feeding on our tax money, and she won't even pay her staff a living wage?!

What else do they also receive though? Free accommodation, fee food etc. It all adds up.

I dont agree with the levels of pay offered by the royal households but I dont think its as simple as comparing your basic rate with theirs.

That clock-keepers job I saw had no such thing...No accommodation whatsoever...basically you had to live nearby or within commuting distance (self funded) and be available at all sorts of weird times...
