35bn trident costs..what a waste of money

You think russia will go to war with the UK and the rest of europe and america? Youre even madder than putin..

Wars can start accidentally. It just needs an incident in which neither side intended to happen and then one side steps up the ante and the other side responds by doing the same.

Just because we live in 2015 doesn't mean that history can never repeat itself

Isn't the whole point of nuclear deterrent to stop wars happening accidentally?

And accidents won't have global consequences if nobody has nuclear weapons.

Get rid of them all.

The 12 billion is our contribution AFTER grants and subsidies we receive back are taken into account.

Yes, I know, as it says in the article " the running cost of Northern Ireland is £20 billion a year of which we (NI) contribute about £9 billion in tax. The British taxpayer is not going to continue giving us £11 billion a year indefinitely ".

Indeed it is. But the Cuba missile crisis was a close example . Kennedy wisely chose not to listen to some of his advisors who recommended bombing the Russian missile sites and instead read Kruschev's first letter letter as a sign that the Soviet leader was anxious to avoid war.

A US Navy destroyer came a hairsbreadth close to depth charging a Soviet sub.

Imagine if some republican hawk had been in the White House instead of Kennedy. History re-written if anyone had been left to write it

I think that without nuclear weapons the Cuban Missile Crisis would have almost certainly led to WW3 between the Warsaw Pact and Nato. If that war turn into a prolonged conflict the consequences would have been tremendous.

Don't you thinks that if nuclear weapons had not been in the possession of both sides during the cold war that a conventional war of some would not have broken out in Europe. "AMD" would not have been part of the cold war vocabulary The bomb in fact was and is the world's biggest peace keeper.

As long as North Korea, China, Russia, India and Pakistan possess nuclear capabilities, so must we.

Actually, I think along the lines that if the French have it so must we. :hihi:
