VIEW2BUY
Unfortunately its easier to blame someonse for your current situation than it is to take steps to take steps to determine your future destiny BACK OFF...or was it an oversight meaning: 'THEIR' not 'YOUR' Let's NOT get PERSONAL.... The Joker
No. I meant 'porches'. Bay windows, bloc paving too. I see, my mistake. In Page Hall there are abandoned freezers, televisions and washing machines dumped on the pavements. I'm sure an enterprising property developer could build a home from the stuff lying around on local streets.
Onthetyne
I think people who complain and moan about high house prices should move into places like Goldthorpe and snap up a cheap house
davyboy
I went onto google maps and had a look at Goldthorpe. Although I wouldn't want to live there it didn't look too bad, we' ve got places in Kent similar. BUT when I saw the celebrations for the death of Maggie I was appalled. i didn't like the woman and she destroyed the mines in Kent (bet you didn't know we had any) and I supported them too but what a load of divvies they were and the placards were all supplied by the Socialist Workers party which says a lot

Onthetyne
Hey great idea! I can feel another edition of Homes Under The Hammer in the making!!! tinfoilhat
Hey great idea! I can feel another edition of Homes Under The Hammer in the making!!! I bet there's a huge amount of houses sold in those sort of places to buy to let landlords. It could be that the lack of housing developements in these places has kept prices super low. A lot of former pit villages are town councils and they can block stuff like this. Is that going on in goldthorpe?
Janus
I think people who complain and moan about high house prices should move into places like Goldthorpe and snap up a cheap house There`s actually a silver lining (for some people) in respect of places like Goldthorpe. That town is not alone. Like the agent says at the end of the clip "it`s a lucrative business".
geared
I bet there's a huge amount of houses sold in those sort of places to buy to let landlords. It could be that the lack of housing developements in these places has kept prices super low. A lot of former pit villages are town councils and they can block stuff like this. Is that going on in goldthorpe? There is/was a program about that on recently. They are attractive as a buy-to-let but need careful management as there are quite a few bad tenants. Often the landlords are from London, don't have a clue what they're doing and end up loosing a bunch of money. Never could figure out why someone from London would think it was a good idea to buy in that area  Hartlepool looked to be worse for it tho. ---------- Post added 13-04-2015 at 10:56 ---------- What Geared explains about the rail network, and the ease of getting to other towns is correct information. However, I have no idea how easy or difficult jobs are to get these days. I'm sure the market still isn't great, but when you consider there is easy access to: Leeds Sheffield Barnsley Rotherham Doncaster Meadowhall (Direct train) Would you believe someone for even a second if they said they had looked for a job in each of those places and could not find one bit of work???? The problem is there isn't a job waiting for them at the end of the street, so they can't be bothered to look any further than that. ---------- Post added 13-04-2015 at 10:58 ---------- Agreed. Even to this day if you speak to 15/16 year olds (and yes I have) in Goldthorpe & Thurnscoe they will tell you that there aren't any jobs because the pits are shut. It's an attitude that's been passed down through the generations. I'm sure if they were actually offered a genuine job working down the mine they would find every excuse under the sun not to do it. Especially one working in the dangerous conditions that were prevalent in the industry at the time the pit there was closed. Manlinose
I went onto google maps and had a look at Goldthorpe. BUT when I saw the celebrations for the death of Maggie I was appalled. i didn't like the woman and she destroyed the mines in Kent (bet you didn't know we had any) and I supported them too but what a load of divvies they were and the placards were all supplied by the Socialist Workers party which says a lot i grew up in Thurnscoe (or at least i got older - not sure if i've grown up yet) and in those days, Goldthorpe was far better - i don't have much reason to go back to either now but i know many people who still live there and i know that the morons who "celebrated" mrs thatcher's death are not representative of the vast majority of the people who live there - there was no love lost for Mrs T and not much sorrow at her passing, but the views of the majority of the people of Goldthorpe/Thurnscoe/Bolton were not represented by those morons. there are people everywhere who will blame others for their situation and i'm not sure goldthorpe or thurnscoe is all that much dis-similar to other areas of south yorkshire in terms of the mentality of some of it's people those towns/villages were (commercially) severely damaged by the closure of the mines and didn't have the economic diversity of the bigger towns and cities to enable them to cope with the loss of such a dominant employer (and other businesses dependent on the money generated) so that those who could, left the town to find work elsewhere, taking their families, money and enterprise with them - but that was a different world - there are opportunities for employment (albeit on low wages) - but one of Mrs Thatcher's legacies is that lost generation represented by the idiots who celebrated her death
