I1L2T3
I don't recall anyone saying anything about the debt, the idea was to cut the deficit. I do. There was quite a bit at the time about how the national debt would grow past £1tn. Don't think anybody expected £1.5tn.

Did Con/Lib say that it wouldn't get to £1.5tn, I recall them saying they would cut the deficit but nothing about stopping the debt from growing. The OBR was certainly forecasting it in 2010. The actual increase has outstripped what was forecast mainly because Osborne missed practically all his targets on deficit reduction. He was in a coalition government so it was very unlikely that he would be able to meet his targets and keep the Lib Dems on side.

They were Danny Alexander's targets too. He was second in command at the Treasury
loraward
They were Danny Alexander's targets too. He was second in command at the Treasury And you are sure they both always agreed? You should also be aware that targets are targets and not guarantees because no one can predict the future.

You should also be aware that targets are targets and not guarantees because no one can predict the future. Given that Danny Alexander's job was to negotiate and enforce spending levels for government departments then there would have been agreement over the targets. They were in it together As for predicting the future it gets even more difficult when people start experimenting with policies never tried before. Expansionary austerity!!! What a nonsense. Wasn't it supposed to achieve an expansion of the private sector?
