Police-Is it ok to park illegally

Recommended Posts

In the light of photographs of Police illegally parking in order to collect food for their break.Does anyone on here have any thoughts on the matter?

During my time as a special I asked this question about doesn't it make us look like hypocrits? I was told that police officers are advised to park as near to the shop/takeaway etc as if there was an emergency call they'd have to abandon food anyway and go. If the car was parked even a couple of minute walk away it would increase the response time and potentially risk lives. Seemed a reasonable answer thinking about it.

As a copper, the moment you put the uniform on until you take it off, you are never fully off duty.

So therefore are you saying that you would expect leniency when collecting refreshments if I am reading this correctly.Parking on a double yellow is a perk of wearing a Blue uniform.By using the cliche of parking a couple of minutes away would inhibit the efficiency of a shout( emergency)I can understand that. But just for the sake of it,could you confirm an approximate the times you were obtaining refreshment and were parked on double yellows and were called to an emergency.

I am not having a pop at the police, but this is just elitism.

Like H & S in a working environment ,the lines are there as preventative measures and are applicable to all.

So a parking warden should enforce them.

It happened to us once, and my pizza went to waste :( I must have been on shift over 100 times, probably getting some food most times. We parked legally whenever sensible though.

Dominos on Eccesall Road near to Napoleons casino. Although looking on street view it's only a single yellow there anyway.

What do you think?

Its regardless what anyone thinks YOU think they shouldn't, so we'll go in circles.

1.Yes i think a warden should ticket offenders - it isn't a police job to do so in most cases.

2.Yes i thinks its okay for the police to park illegally along with the council as they have authorisation to do so.

3.Do i think they should be castigated for not adhering to the letter of the law - no. But not because they are above the law - see point 2.

Being a bit of a pedant,I just had a quick looksee at the Highway code again and was unable to locate any exceptions for police as well as council or anyone, but I stand corrected if I have missed it.I daresay I would probably have a different opinion had there been Fire Engines and Ambulances also photographed doing similar, but as yet there are none.Taxis collecting say women from a Nightclub in the early hours of the morning are not allowed to park on Double Yellows whilst waiting for their fare( and police do move on taxis for doing this)

I have taken time to try and be un biased, but I still cannot condone a police car waiting and being parked on a double yellow for any reason.

I personally think it is a police mindset, we are police and as such are not in a position to be challenged( by anyone including the general public) and I certainly could not see a warden issuing a ticket.

No one has said it's in the Highway Code.

Here's one example of Council authorisation.

A spokesman for Cornwall Council said: “There are exemptions for liveried Council vehicles to park on double yellow lines when officers are carrying out statutory duties or work that requires the vehicle to be in close proximity.

“While we would prefer staff observe parking restrictions there are occasions when for operational reasons vehicles need to be parked close by.”

I bet people wouldn't mind double yellow parking if the police were dragging them out of an overturned vehicle.

I for one would welcome a police officer parking his car on doubles, however at that point they are in fact allowed ,Simples .

PS Unable to understand reason for using council authorisation.Go on I will indulge your use of this intelligent example.Would this be for council say repairing road lighting for example and the use of a cherry picker type contraption. Now let me think, would they be able to do this 20 or 30 yards away being legally parked or would they have to park on double yellows.

Have I got it right by saying they would have to park on double yellows? YAHHH, I think I got it right

Hang on a moment though, what has council duties to do with police parking on double for a sarnie?????.

I will give you an example. Are people doing the school run allowed to park on doubles whilst taking their kids to school? No !!!

Now you justify to SF and me why delivery of a child ( whilst illegally parking on doubles)and police parking on doubles are/are not ok by comparison.
