Proportional Representation

Recommended Posts

Neither are their friends that own the right wing newspapers interested in a fairer system, that would prevent right wing politicians from gaining power, hence the lack of coverage or support for an alternative voting system in the press.

Was a change in the voting system anywhere to be seen in Labour's manifesto? If the current system only favours the right you would have expected to see it it in there in big capital letters..it's a genuine question by the way poppet..

Why would it be?

As previously stated in 2005 Blair got in with a working majority having only obtained 35.2% of all votes cast.

FPTP has favoured both of the main parties in the past, which is why they haven't wanted any change.

The only party that wanted it is the Liberals as they always tended to get a substantial percentage of votes without receiving the corresponding number of seats.

FPTP suited a two party system, that has changed to a certain degree with other parties being formed but as long as it is to the advantage of both Tory and Labour I can't see it changing.

Would PR end tactical voting?

Yes because it would mean that every vote counts.

Having said which, it is a tactical system in it's own right, you need to consider who would be your second acceptable choice if your preferred candidate doesn't make it.

There is no compulsion to chose a second choice if you don't feel any of the others are acceptable.
