Gridlock in Sheffield today (5/6/2015)

Recommended Posts

it was pretty much all caused by having to change Clarkson street oneway traffic direction, so traffic going up Western bank road all had to go into one lane causing a massive bottle neck, which in turn blocked the brookhill roundabout and caused half of the city to be gridlocked.

More annoying was that after the traffic lights on Western bank (the bottle neck) traffic was clear, some simple traffic light timing management to let more vehicles through would hve reduced it massivley.

Real problems around that area, the lights at the bottom Clarkson street (when its been oneway going downhill) have issues, they didnt change to green once in 6 minutes on thursday causing more tailbacks, then suddenly back to normal, no idea why thy have set them up like that.

The appalling layout of Sheffield 's roads mean it doesn't take much to gridlock our city.

But our arrogant council/planners won't admit or change anything.

What, you mean all those pesky hills meaning that there are few routes into the city centre? Or do you mean the annoying traffic lights that allow people to cross and traffic to come out of side roads?

I have suspected this to be the problem for some time.

Serious question to those in the know - is this never actioned when roads are closed ?

I mean roads narrowed, long detours because of pointless one way systems, the few routes into the city made worse by so called "Traffic management" bus lanes that are rarely used, to name a few. Nothing to do with people crossing or coming out of side roads or the hills for that matter, not much can be done about them is there?

Of course it is, different timing plans are introduced and operators can intervene and control sets of signals directly, but there are limits to what can be done. If you stop traffic in one direction to let traffic flow in another direction, queues build up on the other approach. You also have to let pedestrians cross. Drivers often don't help when they exit block.

The Council have a fully staffed urban traffic control centre, whose operators can intervene and directly control traffic signal timings. There's a network of CCTV cameras, so they can see what is happening.

This is something like the third burst water main in as many years around this bit of Glossop Road, clearly whoever is doing the repair don't know what they are doing, this is the busiest part of Sheffield and at the moment it's a Joke.

No.

I think he means all the pointless one way systems, the pointless traffic lights, and the pointless bus lanes that the council have installed to make it more difficult for car users as they think this is the way to encourage car owners to use their beloved busses instead.

Perhaps in your world these "pesky" things don't exist

Unfortunately Burst water mains can happen anytime any place,But bad road planning and layouts is a man made fault so to blame someone for repairing a fault to the water main instead of the road layout is wrong.
