Gridlock in Sheffield today (5/6/2015)

Recommended Posts

A lot of people arriving into work a good hour late moaning about a burst water main or something or other, surprised no mention of it on here yet.

Anyway, it happened earlier than 2200hrs last night (Tu); I was passing, and the road had already been closed at Hanover Way.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to have some staff on the ground as it were, when these issues occur, so they can make decisions about re-routing, traffic light management, I have been caught up twice now in the Hanover Way/Glossop Road bust pipe issue.

To be honest, I'm not sure what decision they might have made. I'm pretty sure that rerouting etc would've just moved the problem elsewhere and made it worse.

I agree. The problem is that there is a lot of traffic, and any change to the available road network causes extra congestion.

'Twas ever thus. Many years ago I remember arriving back in Sheffield city centre, mid afternoon. Just as we were driving around the hole in the road roundabout (gives an idea of how long ago it was) a lorry broke down on the exit onto Arundel Gate. About an hour later, as I left work (near the Cathedral), the whole city centre was gridlocked, including West Bar, West Street/Glossop Road, Brooke Hill/Broad Lane, Netherthorpe Road, Hanover Way, all both ways.

Yes, but reducing lanes, increasing one way systems , adding no entry barriers, increasing bus lanes, operating bus gates, etc etc.... not exactly helped matters has it?

The city centre of Sheffield is a joke and almost entirely self inflicted. Many other cities cope with congestion so much better. Trying to get into or around Sheffield centre in a car, especially at rush hour, is a nightmare. And they wonder why city centre shopping is dying, the new market failing, and businesses choosing to locate offices in other more accessible cities.

It's certainly no worse than Leeds or Bradford.

On the rare occasions I try to get to Sheffield City centre (I Don't go often, as I've few reason to), I find no problem at all. I either park around the Broad Lane, or Campo Lane area, or at Q Park, depending on when I am parking and for how long. Access to either area is easy (I approach the ring road either along Ecclesall Road or Brooke Hill). I cannot speak for the approach from other areas, but I don't see it being any harder. Just what is the problem with parking in Sheffield that doesn't apply to other cities?

Can you name a business that chose to relocate?

GAP!

Moved from the top of Fargate / opposite the Town Hall to Meadowhall!

Of course, this may be related to the fact that the local rentamob were protesting about their sweatshop practices outside on the day it opened, and also because their prices are too high, and the quality of the clothes wasn't that good, and Sheffielders are notoriously tight and don't want to spend more than £10 on a single item of clothing.

Wow, 2001 it was :D
