Endcliffe park plane crash feb 1944 any info please

Recommended Posts

Good evening Jim, many thanks for responding to my recent post regarding the ill fated B17 Mi Amigo. The link you provided did most certainly provide the information I was looking for,  relative to which airfield in Northamptonshire Mi Amigo was operating from on 22nd February 1944.

It transpires the airfield was Chelveston just off the B645 near Rushden. I know this area quite well and while there is not much of the airfield left today there is plenty of evidence of its existence in the past.

The full article was most interesting to read and provided me with a lot of information I was unaware of.

Thank you Jim for pointing me in the right direction.

Best regards John.

Hi PB,  there are no photos showing the nose art of MI-AMIGO as the crew had only received her as their regular aircraft a short time before that fateful mission.  The full story of MI-AMIGO is, for those interested, available in COURAGE ABOVE THE CLOUDS by Paul Allonby (lulu.com) written using documents not available when David Harvey wrote his booklet some years back. A shorter PDF version is available via the Sheffield Fire Brigade history page (click-on link marked 1941-48): http://www.sfbhistory.org.uk/

If members are on facebook, there is a tribute page which has much interesting information in the posts, photos and notes sections: www.facebook.com/EndcliffeParkB17

Would be interested in seeing the finished model. The annual memorial service is on Sunday Feb 24th (two days after the scheduled flypast) - 1.15pm at the memorial, with a USAF/RAF/British Legion Honour Guard, followed by a service, with an exhibition on MI-AMIGO and her crew, at St Augustine's Church on Brocco Bank (2pm).

Interestingly Mr Harvey says that the claims of the bloke who tends the memorial that the aircraft deliberately avoided kids in the park are simply not true.

Other eyewitnesses and the position of the wreckage prove that the aircraft A - Approached from the wrong direction and B - was out of control before the crash.
