Harleyman
Our royal family is not democratically elected. It schemed and murdered its way to where it now is. No Catholics allowed by the way but a first-born female is no longer passed over for the male heir. Such progress. Does not Parliament have the power to change some things that need to be brought into line with the modern age? If they have, why haven't they done it? RickyM
I'm a Republican so I don't pay attention to all the media hype about the Royal Family. I don't know the name of Kate and William's daughter!

Not quite true. Sinn Fein electees become MPs but- as they refuse to swear/affirm loyalty- they do not take their seats.

buck
[/b] Which leaves Sinn Fein MPs in exactly what status in Parliament ? I would say pretty useless, all in all,
RickyM
Sinn Fein MPs wouldn't get anything by taking their seats anyroad. There would be 647 other MPs to contend with. Pretty pointless I'd say.

So I take it that swearing an oath of loyalty to the Sovereign more or less hobbles Parliament from making any changes to the present Monarchial set up since any attempt to institute changes could technically be an act of treason unless the Queen would agree to it ---------- Post added 17-06-2015 at 20:02 ---------- Sinn Fein MPs wouldn't get anything by taking their seats anyroad. Yes, they did. They wanted the Queen to remain as head of state in the event of Scotland becoming independent. Sinn Fein are Republicans but also want a united Ireland so Northern Ireland wouldn't be able to have the Queen as head of state as it would be a Republic - with the Irish president as head of state. Scotland upon becoming independent would be given the same status as Canada, Australia, New Zealand or any other Commonwealth nation which also acknowledges the Queen as head of state I take it.
