biotechpete
Our dog has been sick several times with a foamy mucousy sick today (no yellow bits). The vets said they think viral gastroenteritis so the two might be unrelated if there's something going around.
ccit
I saw Butcher's Denticrunch in the supermarket recently but don't know what's in it. Supermarkets don't usually sell quality dog food. There are better products than Butcher's but there are also worse. If you are interested in changing her food then do a bit of research and a good place to start is the All About Dog Food website. You mention raw diet and if you would like more information just ask because there are a number of raw feeders on here who could advise. Dogs usually love raw meat, offal and bones. flibble
Thanks everyone. Yes it's the hide stuff. That's interesting the same happened to your dog rubydo1. I'll try the duck necks (nice!). I really appreciate your help. The reason we went for dentacrunch is her breath stinks and we wondered if it'd help her teeth. We've tried with bones and other chews and she's just not interested. Sometimes we think she's not a real dog Thanks for the advice ccit, I'll definitely start with looking at that website. We just want her to enjoy her food so are wondering about something else! Now if anyone has any advice on her fear of other dogs and not going to the toilet on a walk....! Claire PS yes she's spayed

As for fear of other dogs and toileting . Do you have any Friends who have dogs you can go walking with ? Dogs Tend to copy each other so walking with other dogs might help With the toileting . What breed is she and how old? Edited June 17, 2015 by rubydo1
flibble
She's a Spanish Water Dog and is two and a half. When we walk with my friends dog she's really happy on and off the lead. Not so much concentrating on toileting then, more socialisation but she's great. They chase each other around and she'll even go up to other dogs. However, when we walk her on the lead on her own she's so timid. She pulls back. We can just about walk passed another dog if they're on the other side of the road but if they're infront it's a no no. We've tried continuing, distraction, trying to get to her level but she looks really scared. There's some lovely dog walkers near us who are very patient and we try to introduce them but she pulls bank or hides behind us. If it's really bad she'll bark, which is when we know she's frightened as she never barks, not even when anyone comes in the house or to the door. We got her when she was two and that was from a lady with other dogs but as they had a lot of space I'm not sure she was walked on a lead much so they just played and ran around together. She's fine with humans. As for the toilet. We've walked and walked when we know she'll be desperate, nothing, yet when we're home and in the garden she'll go straight away. We wondered if it was a lead issue so let her off the lead away from the garden. Nothing! We went to my parents, arrived at 7pm and she didn't wee until 11am the next morning and that was through letting her go in the garden because I was worried she'd be really uncomfortable. Sorry to go on!
rubydo1
Give her a very loose lead don't look at the dog or change your behaviour and if you see her fixating on a dog offer her a favourite treat but don't give it her until the dog has passed . It's not an instant cure but done regular it can break down the behaviour . All dogs are different and its trial and error sometimes what works and what doesn't . Maybe ask the vets about the toilet problem .

Now if anyone has any advice on her fear of other dogs and not going to the toilet on a walk....! Claire PS yes she's spayed Our dog's exactly the same. Also a bit fussy with a sensitive stomach and vomits yellow frothy bile from time to time. I know what you mean about being a 'real dog.' I was used to greedy dogs who wolf everything down, so I found this worrying - trips to vets etc. She's 10 years old now and although she's never had a big appetite, she's healthy and happy. But I still found your post reassuring to know we're not alone. I guess all dogs are different. Thanks for that.
ccit
The reason we went for dentacrunch is her breath stinks and we wondered if it'd help her teeth. Flibble - your dog's breath shouldn't stink. You need to address the reason why. She's at an age where plaque has had time to build up and if this is the case, consider taking her to the vet for a dental scale and polish. Also start a daily regime of cleaning her teeth. There are special long handled toothbrushes for dogs and they often come in a blister pack along with enzymatic dog toothpaste. My choice is usually Virbac but Logic is OK and there are others. If you have never done this there is plenty of information on the Internet. I can promise you that it pays dividends if you persist. Also look at her diet because poorer quality food can cause smelly breath. Avoid any food with meat and animal derivatives and look for foods with a named source of meat and it should be first on the list of ingredients. If you do go onto raw feeding you may find that your dog's breath will be a lot fresher. Chews are of limited use in dental hygiene but bones are said to help keep teeth clean. Again, look it up on the Internet because you need to be careful in giving safe ones. Dried fish skin treats can be helpful too. However, nothing beats regular brushing. flibble
Thanks again all for your advice. Booking her into the vets is something we've been meaning to do. We took her when she was off her food incase her teeth were sore and they mentioned about a deplaquing service. I'll get her booked in. We've got a toothbrush and toothpaste but she really didn't like it, we'll persevere though. I'll look more into the food ingredients too Anna B, glad to hear it's not just us. She takes it to the nth degree, she's a Spanish Water Dog but hates water!!
ccit
If her teeth and gums are the problem then you will be delighted when they are cleaned up. Also, it is a great start for you to keep them clean by brushing. Don't worry about her not liking it - I've been cleaning the teeth of my lot for years and not one of them likes it but at least it is done quickly as they are in good condition. Just be firm and she will get used to the procedure. I saw the bags of Dentacrunch in the supermarket recently and this thread has made me look at the ingredients. Here they are: Chicken & country vegetables Composition Cereals, Meat and animal derivatives (8%* in the hoops ), Derivatives of vegetable origin, Vegetable protein extracts, Oils and fats, Minerals, Vegetables (discs : 0.6 % dried vegetables, equivalent to 4% vegetables), Yeasts. Looking at that list, it is not possible to say what it exactly contains but I can't find the active ingredient that is supposed to prevent build up of plaque.
