Elite firms exclude working class

Recommended Posts

Of course they are but in the context of this subject it is appropriate people for certain roles in certain circumstances.

I find it frustrating to hear this type of sniping under the pretence of the poor working classes. Over the past generation there have been massive changes in opportunities for people from modest backgrounds if the person is willing to apply oneself and has a goal.

You may find Cherie Blairs autobiography interesting. Like her or not it is an inspiring story of achievement from a non priviledged background

Ref. the edit to your post don't you think it is because they choose the most suitable candidates that their business flourishes ?

That's not what the link to the report says, it's talking about people from less advantaged backgrounds who are able and talented, and who have applied themselves and had a goal, being denied chances because of their backgrounds.

Businesses prosper or not for many reasons. There is no excuse for prejudice, discrimination, or excluding people because they come from a working class background.

If a business is being prejudiced in choosing who they employee, than a rival business that is not prejudiced will reap the benefits. This should not be used as an excuse for yet more legislation and bureaucracy that employers will just figure out how to get round anyway.

Surely in a meritocracy, the best results will come from the widest possible pool of candidates? Why limit it to a much smaller pool of the elite, with a much narrower field of vision and experiences?

That's what's wrong with this class riddled country and why we have such inferior leadership. They are pre-chosen by the elite, for the elite and of the elite, their main attribute being an over-inflated ego.

Absolutely! And what's rarer than someone from a disadvantaged background being a top judge, are people from a privileged backgrounds whose parents paid for them to go to a top public school who work in packing factories or serving burgers & fries in MacDonalds....

eh? that doesn't make much sense.

I know there are some stupid kids in 'posh' schools like there are in all schools. But generally speaking, all children when given a good education are capable of becoming quite bright and achieving to a decent standard.

So you'd expect that 99.9% of children who go to a 'top public school' come out the other end with the knowledge and qualifications to attain a 'higher than mcdonalds' level of employment. And failing that at least the contacts and friendships to achieve a similar result.

You'd be rather annoyed if you paid x thousands a year and your child came out with only a mcdonalds level of education.

Top public schools are selective. They only accept the brightest kids in the first place. So it is likely they will turn out brighter than the average kids.

It's no great surprise.

Eton has a very high entry level at CE.

I'm not entirely sure the bold bit is correct...

Do you not think it occasionally depends on who your dad is? I'm pretty sure that successive generations attend certain establishments - that's quite a coincidence, the academic crème de la crème, all coming from a very small proportion of the population...

First things first. You have to have the money.

Eton is not the best example you could have picked - Eton has educated nineteen British prime ministers and generations of the aristocracy and has been referred to as the chief nurse of England's statesmen.[2] Charging up to £11,478 per term , £34,434 per year. About fourteen scholarships are awarded annually. A scholarship is worth one tenth of the School Fee (still over £34,000 to pay); part or all of the remaining fee may be remitted according to need.

Until 18 December 2010, Eton College was an exempt charity under English law (Charities Act 1993, Schedule 2). Under the provisions of the Charities Act 2006, it is now an excepted charity, and fully registered with the Charities Commission,[93] and is now one of the 100 largest charities in the UK.[94]

In 1995 the National Lottery granted money for a £4.6m sports complex, to add to Eton's existing facilities of two swimming pools, 30 cricket squares, 24 football, rugby and hockey pitches and a gym.

Oh yeah no matter how clever you are if you're a girl you don't get in?

You are correct - in most Public schools there is a sort of "dim" class for those who are legacies of previous generations and aren't that clever. But mostly they are selective. If you are a total moron, you don't get in whoever daddy is. It's no fun being educated at a high level when you cant even keep up with the basics.

It's quite difficult for a boy to get accepted at Cheltenham LC too.
