The Bottom Welly, Shalesmoor

Can I have a taste of that 50 yr old Balvenie please?

I very rarely ask for tasters unless I'm confuddled by the choice and can't see what is being served. Even then I'll probably hone in on two then choose between them.

A nice big blackboard with descriptions of the beers never goes wrong, places like The Wellington in Brum or The Grove in Hudd will tell you what style every beer is as well...because there are some people in this world who do not like hops.....mad I know.

You can't always tell until you taste it though. I don't get samples just to top up a pint, there's been several occasions when I've tried something and thought 'no thanks' and got something else instead.

It has become a "League of Gentlemen" pub...."Are you local...?" The owner treated everyone other than a few favoured cronies with ill-concealed contempt. The cronies, likewise. Thank Heaven for Gary behind the bar. There is no way this place should have come to such a sorry pass, given the flourishing Fat Cat and Kelham, and revived Hillsborough Hotel. I guess it reflects the inevitable consequence of a "people business" being taken over by someone with the interpersonal skills of ...well, any League of Gentlemen character.

Funnily enough when Neil and Sheila owned it they had a League of Gentlemen NYE party. I went as Papa Lazarou...."'Ello Dave".

  • 3 weeks later...

Going past on the tram yesterday, there was some activity - i.e., a van parked outside and doors opened. I have fond memories only of Harley the dog, and the always pleasant Gary behind the bar. The place could not survive ownership by someone (and cronies) who made Neil and Sheila look in retrospect like Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly. Let's hope for better times ahead.

Saw on Twitter/Facebook today that it's being taken over by the same folk who run the Sheaf View.

"As many of our customers already know, we have just taken over The Wellington at Shalesmoor, S3. It is presently closed for renovations and is due to re open Mid September as our Neepsend Brewery Tap. We are currently looking to build a team of enthusiastic and hard working individuals and have various positions available. If you have an interest in real ale and fine spirits, and would like to join us, please send your cv to
"

It's going to be easier for me than traipsing across town to the Sheaf!
