Jsa and not enough national contributions

Recommended Posts

a friend of mine has just been told that he cant claim jsa because he hasn't paid enough ni contributions. for the past 15 months he has been an employee and prior to that worked at an agency. they say that they have calculated this on his 2013-2014 contributions. is he entitled to any other benefit?

He can claim JSA(IS) means tested rather than JSA© which is conts based and they don't just use one year to assess your NI conts these days. There's no such thing as can't claim. You can claim anything you like and provided you meet the conditions for getting it you will.

See point re two years and not just one for NI conts paid and associated conditions

In the old days when I started it was Unemployment Benefit for those who had and Supplementary Benefit for those who hadn't. Since 1996 it's been JSA - ether the conts based or Income support variant. You only get JSA© for 6 months unlike UB which you got for a year.

he going to phone them on Monday apparently his wife works over 30 hours and he been told he wont get owt

It depends on what's coming into the house money wise - BUT tell him to ask even if he gets no money if he can sign on for credits only. This is very very important. You basically get an NI stamp as well as your dole each week and the Govt is changing the pensions qualifying rules next year so it's important that you don;t have gaps on your NI record. Might not matter now but it will when he wants his State Pension/ Too late to do anything about it when it gets to that stage so best sorted now

They may trying to fob him off cos it's one of these things doesn't happen every day so if he gets someone who says he can't he asks for a supervisor cos he can! But it is perfectly legit to do provided he satisfies the qualifying conditions i.e. like someone getting JSA he's actively seeking work.
