chem1st
Quite simply. The NHS should prescribe the unemployed money and double dole to pregnant unemployed people. Not least because it is the right thing to do for people's health, but also in order to save money in the long run and for the sake of the economy in the long term, the NHS should prescribe 'dole'. Cash payments. The sanctioning regime, and treatment of the disabled etc. is causing serious health problems in the population, and even leading to people becoming disabled, it has caused many suicides too. Mental health problems are being bred by a quite frankly evil draconian and punishing social security system. We ought to be moving towards a citizens income. And although we need to encourage employment, there is a tried and tested mechanism for this purpose that has been shown to work, known as 'decent wages' and 'employment contracts'. Pregnant women ought to get double payments from the NHS. They carry the life of two, they are twice as important. Simple.
Anna B
I agree on the monetary front entirely, although I don't know how we can afford it, (but an we afford not to do it in the long run?) However, mental health is not just about money. I do think some sort of work activity is good for people's mental health in terms of socialisation, usefulness and longterm goals. Do you agree? And have you any thoughts on how this side of the equation can be tackled?

I have to ask: what is your choice of drug that makes you come out with this? Is it prescription or recreational? I really need to know. ---------- Post added 25-06-2015 at 05:40 ---------- I agree on the monetary front entirely, although I don't know how we can afford it, (but an we afford not to do it in the long run?) Or is it only a good idea if someone else is paying? I've sponsored a pregnant person on more than several occasions.

Mr Bloke
Wheres the funding coming from? ... maybe from stopping the dole of those that the NHS see as fit to work?
Daven
Wheres the funding coming from? My thoughts exactly since the NHS doesn't have sufficient funding to cope now.
Cyclone
Quite simply. The NHS should prescribe the unemployed money and double dole to pregnant unemployed people. Being unemployed is not a medical issue. Although I do understand what you mean about long term health and the costs associated with it being poor. Pregnant women ought to get double payments from the NHS. They carry the life of two, they are twice as important. Simple. I'm not sure about this. They don't have twice the costs, they won't get twice as much once the child is born, so I can't really see the justification. They already get free healthcare, and so will the child. In the real world, which is where the rest of us live, it won't. It would simply increase the number of people faking illness, wasting NHS time, and increase the number of teenage single parent pregnancies. A very naive and foolish suggestion. 1/10. Must try harder.
Cyclone
Wheres the funding coming from? If the business case can be made for long term overall savings then it's worth it...

Otherwise you wouldnt come out with such drivel. If they stopped having kids they couldnt afford and actually got a job and paid tax like the rest of us there wouldnt be a problem.
