Today's nightclubs compared to the 70s

Recommended Posts

I had some great nights out in the nightclubs of Sheffield in the 70s and early 80s there were lots to choose from.

Though my clubbing day's have been over since the the Romans invaded I was wondering how the clubs of today compare to then.

I could not name you one night club in Sheffield if there are any, I persume there are but how many exist now and how have they changed to my day...

Let's here from today club goer's

Sticky floor, 8 pints at 10.30, Pogues and The Fall.

The Limit was my home from home when I came over here from Manchester in 88.

Mind you the beer was Websters, which was pish even before it was watered down.

Late 70s and early 80s i spent many a saturday night in either the crazy daizy or romeo and juliets, it was the daizy with the lads and romeos with the girlfriend, both completely different clubs but had great nights in both of them, oh and they played proper music then as well !

The main attraction for nightclubs for me was the availability of drink for another 3 hours from 11-2.00 am. Of course now with the liberalisation of the drinking laws it is now very easy to go to a late bar if you want to continue drinking rather than having to go to a club.

As I'm familiar with the Gay Scene, it has had its real ups and downs since I came to Sheffield in 1995. Climax at the Uni and Dempseys have endured all along through thick and thin, but Cossack, Planet, Kikis/Trash, Xes, Beluga, Manhattans, Charles St., Roebuck, bar Miles, Fuel (Twice lol!), Lions Lair, Affinity, Sanctuary, Icons, Gossips etc. have all come and gone, some of them lasting no more than a few months.

Back in the 80's and 90's I know that almost the whole gay scene was based down in Attercliffe as most LGBT's were scared shy of showing themselves walking around in drag or going in or out of a 'gay' bar anywhere in the city centre and inadvertantly bumping into friends/family/workmates out on the town who would not know that they were gay.

As being LGBT has become so much more acceptable, so the scene moved into the city, but at present there is only one fulltime LGBT venue Dempseys. However, there are signs that maybe one _______ or two new venues may be opening soon but where and when will have to await more news....

I can't actually remember any gay clubs in the 70s in sheffield unless I was just unfamilar with them and today I could see that they are more popular than they were in my day.

I do remember going into Niche as a one off in 1997 and felt like a Grandad compared to the people that were in there as my Daughter worked behind the bar only went in the once..I did notice the music was weird and not my scene and the people were dancing very strangely to an even stranger type of music so it had changed a lot then from the 70s.

I wondered as of 2015 are there any nightclubs in Sheffield

I agree.

Drink laws killed the nightclub.

Cant say I really miss them though, paying to get in and often fights when they all shut at the same time drinks were often overpriced and badly kept too.

You can now pick the type of place you enjoy for a late drink and not pay more than pub prices.

Although have to say had a good time in some of the old places.

Sheffield was epic in the 90's

Love 2 be @ music factory

Rise @ Leadmill

Nemos/Niche

and one of the biggest club nights in the world Gatecrasher @ the Republic, you'd find lots of drugs in those places but rarely any trouble with the exception of Niche, just people having a good time

Quite a few other good nights as well late 90's early 00's then, around 10 years ago, the whole lot went to ***t

Now everything seems to be catered more towards the commercial end, not that I've been clubbing in time like

Back in the 70's and 80's it was more about extending your drinking hrs rather than going for the scene or music, although there was specialised clubs for rockers such as Rebels and the Wap. Now you can drink into the early hrs in most pubs so no need to go unless you enjoy the music.
