vaughanb
Hi All I purchased a couple of disposable helium cylinders to fill a few balloons at an event we had a few weeks ago. On the canisters it gives instructions how to de-pressurise the cylinders and then states they can be taken to any recycling facility or left with normal household waste. I have taken them to Blackstock Road tip, who refused them and would not advise where to take. I then tried the bin men, who again refused and I have spoken to a couple of scrap metal people who again refused. Has anyone had the same thing and if so where did you taken them once empty? They are totally empty and de-pressurised so they are effectively just metal cylinders. They are only small ones, approx 500mm tall and 400mm dia so it's not as if they are the huge ones. They are fairly light weight as they are not the reusable style. Thanks in advance.
iansheff
Well I know nothing about those but asked bin men what to do with aerosol cans and was told to take them to recycling at the tip. I did this and they put them somewhere separate, last time I went they just said throw them in the general waste. The case of not taking all plastics for recycling annoys me. How come some places will take some plastics but not others, surely any plastics that say SYCC will not recycle can be collected and shipped to a council that does recycle them. Leah-Lacie
Put one in the black bin, and one in the blue bin and cover them with other rubbish I say. If they say they can be left with household waste, then they probably can - Most likely that the guys at the tip and the bin men weren't sure, so they refused. Timeh
I de-pressurised the bottle then cut it up with an angle grinder. Even my local scrap man wouldnt take it but once cut up i had no problems getting rid.

vaughanb
I like your thinking, a bit of up-cycling. Bit beyond my talents unfortunately.
