Give Sheffield Airport a chance.

Recommended Posts

actually the idea is to move flights around to free up capacity at Heathrow and Gatwick by moving flights that don't actually need to be at heathrow and gatwick. but i can see why the government is concentrating investment in trasport infrastructure around the south east because no on in the north actually thinks they need it. so hs2 will probably not get built because of scepticism from the folk it is designed to benefit. so jobs will continue to migrate from sheffield and sheffielders will continue to buy their goods from pound shops

the idea of an airport for sheffield is to boost the economy of sheffield but to be viable it needs flights other than those bringing in commerce. but has been clearly demonstrated most folk round here don't actually want the situation to improve. they just want to go to the betting shop eat at greggs buy their clothes from oxfam and moan that all the jobs are in leeds. at least it keeps house prices down.

So, what flight don't need to be at LHR or Gatwick ?

The reason those airlines fly into Heathrow and Gatwick is because that is where they want to fly to, because that is where their customers want to fly to. If there was a business case to fly to Donny instead of Heathrow then they would save a fortune by giving up their expensive slots at Heathrow and using Donny.

You can't force those airlines to fly elsewhere, they simply won't bother.

Incidentally, how many of your specialist holiday flights from Heathrow were on chartered flights and how many on scheduled carriers?

I've asked before but didn't really get a reply..where could you build an airport that would be nearer to Sheffield then Robin Hood is...?

I've got a press release from when the airport was built and there was a bit of history of failed attempts. Two sites in the past earmarked were Coal Aston and Todwick. But this would have been a time when runways were shorter.

The objections at Todwick would still be going on now if they'd chosen there... :)

a percentage of the ones carrying folk from north of watford who have had to take a seat in a plane from gatwick because there wasn't one from anywhere else.

it isn't a worry to me but as sheffield has an average wage around £2 grand lower than leeds it should concern sheffield. it is certainly easier to build your new factory in the northern powerhouse of leeds liverpool manchester and bradford than get decent transport links to sheffield particularly as the locals don't give a fig.

We don't shop much at IKEA. We go to an airport much more often than that.

Still I think Sheffield needs an IKEA more than an airport for its economy and employment development.

It will pull people closer that now go to Leeds or Nottingham.

All north of Watford and all have closer airports than Doncaster and all have more flights/options than DSA. So why should airlines fly out of DSA when other airports are picking up what DSA can't attract ?

that depends. from the point of view of the uk or the north it doesn't matter where the development takes place. from the point of view of sheffield it probably does because these guys won't be paying their taxes here but more over in the rotherham doncaster bit of south yorkshire. but the main thrust will be further north in leeds. it already has connections via m1 and m62 plus an airport. it will have hs2 and hs3. sheffield will have sod all except an empty city centre

I haven't noticed the financial heart of London, the West End etc migrating to Heathrow - or Manchester's business district migrating to the airport. Can't think of any developments around East Midlands. Cardiff airport is out in the sticks with absolutely nothing there.

I don't think you've thought this through

Doncaster is a comparatively new airport which will continue to grow. Give it time.
