The council let Sheffield airport disappear into oblivion, yet Leeds are to open another at the old Church Fenton RAF Base. Good old Sheffield council letting the City lag behind, have they no ambition for the City?

 

Passenger flights are to start at Yorkshire's latest international airport.

 

Leeds East Airport, at the former Church Fenton RAF base between Leeds and York, has been given permission for what are described as VIP flights to destinations including Faro, Malaga and Cannes.

The airport was a dead duck from the get go, the runway was far too short to take popular jets used by the low budget airlines, couple that with a lack of radar and the fast growing budget airlines chose Leeds and Manchester to operate from.

No one from Sheffield goes to London to catch a short haul flight.

Yes they do. I do it and so do colleagues. Sometimes Luton is actually a better option than manchester, starting from Sheffield because of flight times. Its not too much further than manchester airport (less than 1 hour extra to get there). It might be the case only a small fraction of people do this though.

Leeds East Airport is roughly the same distance from Leeds City Centre as Doncaster Sheffield Airport is to Sheffield. If Donny airport ever reaches capacity then maybe we'll get a second Airport too.

Sheffield will not fly. One look at the map and look at its size, its main road structures, developments and you can see why leeds is expanding and Sheffield isn't.

 

Don't see this as anything bad or negative, expansion can be a waste of time and energy, why expand when everything is fine, it is just as easy to take a train to another airport.

We shouldn't build one now - we should have pushed the one we had. Now i push paper in an office where there should be an airport. Shame.

I am rather glad we don't have planes taking off/approaching over Sheffield.

One moment people say they want an airport, next moment they cry over the side effects.

Its a long way from masterplan to reality. LBA have been talking about expansion for years.

 

I used Sheff Apt many times to fly via Amsterdam and it was very convenient, but TBH it's not that far to Manchester from SW Sheff, 1 hour 10 mins over the hills, so no big deal.

Not so handy for business users, flight times can be very inconvenient.

 

Manchester has flights to European hubs all day long.
