Should the state subsidise personal private transport?

Recommended Posts

For the disabled and others we heavily subsidise so called 'public transport' which is privately owned and run to maximise shareholders profits. So why not use these same funds to subsidise personal private transport instead?

Its barbaric to expect anyone to use buses (IMO the state should pay us to use buses) But to subsidise and encourage the disabled and others to use these plague wagons is especially cruel. The funds allocated for public transport should be transferred over for folk to have and use their own personal private transport. The disabled and vulnerable deserve their own independence, freedom to go where they want, when they want and travel comfortably with ease.

There is already a scheme for people with significant mobility difficulties. The top mobility rate of DLA can be used to lease a car through the Motability scheme, which has been in existence for a long time. It's around £57 a week, so anyone receiving that who doesn't wish to either lease a car or use public transport could use it to pay for taxis.

doesn't the higher level of DLA provide enough cash to drive around in a nice C-class Merc ? I've seen more disabled Park-where-I-like badges on them than on any other car.

Oh, and I believe the correct term is peasant wagon

No it doesn't. The cars on the scheme are limited. I have a very senior, stressful job and work way above contracted hours. I get paid pretty well for this. I don't need to walk about for this job just talk and write reports. I get DLA after a brain tumour affected my left side. It affects my mobility but not my voice or mental capacity. If I work all hours why can't I top up my higher rate mobility money with my own, personally owned money to get a nicer car???

Also, why can't I use my blue badge when I'm in my husband's Ferrari or Range Rover Evoque???

The major part of this motability money should ONLY go to people that work; people that do not work are not busy enough to warrant car journeys, they would be ok on the bus.

That depends on their disability...

If they are not very mobile then getting on, off and around a bus is very difficult especially when the disabled spots are filled by babies in prams the size of a small armoured vehicle.

You are also saying that they cant go to places which aren't served by buses

Utter nonsense.

My mum in law is severely disabled and lives in a rural location with no bus stops nearby. The bus stops that are there have no pavements to them from where she lives anyway.

She goes to hospital frequently, physio, day care, does her own shopping etc... Nine out of ten journeys she does herself with some help from her husband.

For the medical related journeys this avoids an ambulance being used to transport her both ways to hospital.

She doesn't work.

This is where you lost all credibility.

why wouldn't you? Isn't the badge associated with the person, not the car ?

I know of someone who pulled that scam by using a close relatives Blue badge, and that's what they did. So your husband can use the badge if he's driving you to the shops / hairdressers / restaurant. Or even if he is on his own and just wants to park in the city centre for free! (as long as he doesn't get caught by the traffic wardens)

It's like a get-out-of-jail-free card, for parking tickets :|

It is very difficult for anyone to know how much support the disabled, as a group, need.

They live in cities and rural areas, but having said that, surely hospital transport that may be picking someone else up in the next town would be better.

Some people in wheelchairs can work, yet other have no inclination to work; really difficult to get the right balance.
