Cyclone
IDL, short for interactive data language, is a programming language used for data analysis. It is popular in particular areas of science, such as astronomy. I suppose that's fair enough, but it's clearly a bit old fashioned in it's structure. Goto, not OO then, not even procedural really. Developed in the 70's, most development stopped by the early 90's by the sounds of it, some half assed web enablement about a decade ago and that's that. Anyway, that's not really the point, the comments in the code about deliberately altering the data to fit preconceptions is pretty important though. spindrift
The global temperature analysis is robust and the work of the UEA Climatic Research Unit, on the land component, is fully supported by two separate independent analyses in the US at Nasa and Noaa. The evidence for climate change over the past 100 years also comes from observed changes in retreating glaciers throughout most of the world, a decline in Arctic sea ice, melting of the Greenland ice sheet, changes in precipitation patterns, and changes in vegetation and the behaviour of wildlife. All three analyses of global temperature have been thoroughly and independently assessed by the IPCC, which is one of the most rigorous scientific review bodies in existence. Many thousands of scientists have dedicated their time to preparing and reviewing the most comprehensive and authoritative assessments of climate science available. In addition, governments from around the world have also reviewed the IPCC findings and, by consensus, approved the key findings in the summaries for policymakers and synthesis reports. http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/dec/04/climate-change-uea-email The CIA killed Kennedy, the American government blew up the twin towers, the moon landings were faked, Jesus really existed, Area 51 houses UFO's kept secret since the 1950's by the US government, Princess Diana was murdered on the orders of Prince Phillip, and man made global warming is a conspiracy to increase research grants to the sciences. Funky_Gibbon
For anyone who missed it, watch the Friday Newsnight interview between Prof Andrew Watson and some former US Senate spin doctor. Prof Watson's comment right at the end is brilliant.
Funky_Gibbon
...and man made global warming is a conspiracy to increase research grants to the sciences. Of course in reality research grants haven't really changed all that much in the past 15 years. Here for example is the budget provided by the US Federal Gov for all aspects of climate change. http://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-05-461 Money given to companies to develop technologies rose substantially between 1993 and 2006, money given to those evil climate scientists and their global conspiracy barely rose at all. In contrast according to Amy Goodman, fossil fuel companies spend $300,000 per day lobbying Washington.
convert
For anyone who missed it, watch the Friday Newsnight interview between Prof Andrew Watson and some former US Senate spin doctor. Prof Watson's comment right at the end is brilliant. Do you men where he told the realist to 'shut up' or where he called him an 'asshole'.. Incidentally the BBC have apologised for Prof Watson's (a professor at the Creative Research Unit, at the University of junk science, er East Anglia) outburst. spindrift
University of junk science, er East Anglia Consistently in the top ten universities in the country. Come to think of it, what are your qualifications? The ones that qualify you as an expert rather than published research scientists?

Vague_Boy
Now Gordon Brown is accusing Anthropomorphic Climate Change skeptics of a "Flat Earth" mentality. If there was one thing that could convince me that the whole Anthropomorphic Climate Change issue is a big con, designed to boost federalism, increase the micro-management of people's lives and to bleed them dry financially with a host of "carbon" taxes, it's the fact that Crash Gordon is pushing this agenda as well. If that slack-jawed clown told me that Christmas Day fell on December 25th, I'd get a second opinion. (BTW, surely it is Al Gore who has the "Flat Earth" mentality, with his constant "the science is settled" mantra. Science is never "settled", it's always up for questioning, that's why it's science and not dogma.)
