Longcol
They need to show some ambition and speculate to accumulate. Instead of just settling for managing the decline of the city. Whose money do you want them to speculate with? Do you pay your council tax to Sheffield? Have you dropped your crazy assertion that Sheffield can become an Alpha world city? glennpickard
some ideas to open Sheffield City Centre up on Sundays: 1) the Council to get out of the way relative to opening times and any other restrictions. Let the businesses decide 2) free parking anywhere for the 24 hour sunday period on city owned roads 3) encourage events to take place on sundays. What about a cycling road race Sheffield to York and back ? Or Barnsley, Buxton or Brinsworth on different weeks ? 4) do things for kids events on sundays. Block off certain streets and let kids run races, egg & spoon, small fairs etc. Bring in some donkeys for rides ??? 5) tours at the cathedral/ city hall ? Hot air balloon take offs 6) mobile food vendors encouraged with no permit charges. 7) Air Force/Navy Army/Police tents to allow kids/youths to see what is required to join and what happens when they do Canoe races on the River Don ! There are dozens of things that could be tried. Some would be successful but maybe not all. I believe the real problem is the lethargic council that Sheffield unfortunately always seem to inherit. A lack of leadership. Little vision, energy, flexibility, and no marketing: just "This is the way we have always done it !"

VIEW2BUY
York has loads of history, which makes it a tourist destination, and things happen from because of that. I don't thifnk Sheffield can compete with a lot of what York's got, but when you visit Leeds and Manchester, and compare their city centers to ours, then you realise how far behind Sheffield city center has become. Not too far behind as their concentration on Retail Parks is more relative for the future of all Cities. Where plenty of parking is available and if not providing public toilets there are always the inevitable Fast glorious Food outlets on these sites to provide free of charge convieniences. With the proposed NEW TRAM ROUTE.... Cathedral to Rotherham PARKGATE soon to be happening and also the IKEA OUTLET soon also to be developed makes SHEFFIELD most appealing. Regarding the City Centre I feel from observations there are major shifts in place. I wouldn't underestimate the future development of the CITY CENTRE which could be in comparison with innovation to BRISTOL. So forget Leeds/Manchester etc rather olde skool...SHEFFIELD will be the WINNERS.

SteelHouse
Where are these fantastic beautiful cosmopolitan cities that some people allege to have visited!! Leeds, Manchester and the like are NO different to Sheffield. Underneath the extra street or 2 of gloss they have the same issues as Sheffield , and in fact any big city in the current climate. Ask yourself , would you REALLY want to live in London or New York etc, because judging by some of the comments here, that's what Sheffield has to aspire to!! Personally I like the city, yes there are aspects of it that could be better but overall, the beating heart of a city comes from the people within it, and as everyone knows, Sheffield folk are very friendly to almost everyone, it isn't tagged the UKs biggest village for nowt!! So, instead of mugging the city off to everyone/anyone take some comfort in the fact that it is unique in its own way.
cuttsie
Some people would blame the council for the castle being destroyed in 1644. They have in fact destroyed a much older historical area only this year.

metalman
Sunday trading hours are set by law in case you hadn't noticed. Nothing to do with the Council. Except that in the budget a few days ago George Osbourne said he plans to give councils the powers to extend them.
