There was a TV program about 10 years ago where they discussed the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World. It was a docudrama with each episode showing the struggle that surrounded the building of each "wonder".

Their list comprised of:

  • SS Great Eastern
  • Bell Rock Lighthouse
  • Brooklyn Bridge
  • London sewerage system
  • First Transcontinental Railroad
  • Panama Canal
  • Hoover Dam

A typical Anglicised list. Most of these were preceded or far superceded elsewhere. A modern list should include things like the Suez Canal (Much older than the Panama), London underground (first in the world), the Three Gorges Dam (unrivalled in scale), de Ijsselmeer/Flevoland region (largest reclaimed land project in the world), Dubai, the Oresund bridge and so on. And even then we are likely forgetting dozens of candidates.

As time goes on, of course things are going to be superseded, that's the nature of progress

With things like the Panama Canal, much of the program was spent looking at the challenges that arose whilst making them. For example major discoveries on combating tropical diseases were made, without which it would have been impossible to build, remember the French gave up trying to build build a canal through Panama after it cost them over 20 thousand lives around 15 years earlier.

The first modern sewage system again saved countless lives, and it made living a a city desirable, it was a far larger step forward for metropolitan life than the underground.
