The most powerful man in politics cannot change US gun laws.

Recommended Posts

The American Constitution doesn't give their citizens the right to bear whatever arms they want to, so a degree of restriction already exists and this is accepted under the constitution. With this in mind, guns could be added to the list of restricted arms without braking the Constitution if the political will existed.

How many people do you think would die in the process of the federal government forcing their way into millions of homes in order to take guns from people? How much bitterness and hostility do you think there would be towards whichever law enforcement body was tasked with this? It's a non-starter of an idea. The cities that have the highest body count from firearms are almost all Democrat controlled. Maybe they should look to themselves before blaming the "rednecks" down south and the "hayseeds" in the midwest that would prefer to keep their weapons.

Hand loaded muskets should do the trick.

These sentiments were appropriate and relevant back in the wild west days but now? come on!

Thankfully no politician, even the President can dicker around with what is contained in the US Constitution. The Second Amendment grants citizens the right to bear arms.

If any politician or President could change an amendment to suit his own personal agenda there would be no sense in having a constitution in the first place. The power to debate and add an addendum to an existing Amendment lies with the highest court in the land... the Supreme Court

So why couldn't the Supreme Court make the amendment?

When did we lose the right to bear arms? The English Bill of Rights has the line "That the Subjects which are Protestants may have Arms for their Defence suitable to their Conditions and as allowed by Law."

Yes thankfully, keep on killing thousands of innocent men, women and children

Many more die in road accidents, drug overdoses, alcohol abuse. What do you want to do about that?

There was once a group of people who thought that alcohol was a serious threat to the American way of life and got the Volstadt Act passed. Need I say more?

There are laws which prohibit the use of high powered, assault type weapons. A way of life for those who like to hunt or use firearms in sporting events or feel better having a weapon as home defence should not be jeopardized by misguided "do gooders" who from past experience achieve nothing and only manage to create even worse problems

Because there has been no call to make the amendment and most likely never will. Even if Congress and the President reached an accord of some sort to change the 2nd Amendment it would have to go through a long, long process of debate in the Supreme Court with arguments from both sides for and against it, involving a whole army of lawyers and it would create a serious division nationwide with unknown but probably serious repercussions.

For myself I don't like laws passed by "powerful men" and "powerful men" need to be aware that their power has definite limits. I think that most Americans are inclined to think the same

It's hard to believe that people still caw "YOU CAN'T MESS WITH THE CONSTITUTION!" when they know full well that stricter gun control does not mean that the constitution will be infringed upon.

Even if it DID mean you had to mess with the constitution, the constitution DOES get messed with. It's called amending and it has been going on for years, the last time it happened was in 1971.
