stpetre
Great photo, 'Siren and 'Hopman' are exactly right about the location. The bus (41 or47) is the route that went from Pond Street through the bottom Wybourn and into mid-Darnall (Coleridge Road area) onto Shepcote Lane. The old abattoir would be further behind the camera as was Woodbourn Road. The 'Urban Clearway' signs were introduced in 1967, if that helps. Burton Road, not street is in Neepsend and the company was Turton Bros and Matthews if I've got the right location for them .] ---------- Post added 01-08-2015 at 15:08 ---------- Edited August 1, 2015 by stpetre add
Sandy Steer
Looks familiar, I worked at Turton Bros and Matthews for a short time, it was a family business and a JP, Mr JD Peel, was the owner. This was halfway up the hill on the right hand side.
tenbob
I recon it's where the bottom of Manor Lane meets with Cricketin Rd with the old Steadfast works was just before the bend at the bottom of the Lane
micksyerman
You are right tenbob, it is looking from east to west along Cricketinn road & the 90 degree bend was adjacent to the slag heap. This was just before the first part of the parkway was opened to link to Manor lane. Before the Parkway was opened you had to drive through Darnal to get to the city from Aston/Handsworth. Then they used some of the slag to fill the base of the Parkway to the City. I used to drive that way to work when I was 16/17 in my 1962 Mini which was my first car.
