How Can We Clean Up Politics In This Country?

Recommended Posts

Are people less happy to have a coalition government than single party rule or would the electorate give another coalition a chance?

I would not object if the Tories won a majority with a much greater percentage of the vote; its not really about being happy.

Wow, a day is a long time on SF!

Re: Direct Democracy and free.vote

Who decides what issues we get to vote on?

You do. Anyone can create a new tag and vote (eg mulch the homeless)

You might want a vote rescinding gay marriage rights. Sorry, but you can't have one.

Yes you can

Or if you do and you win, I want a vote straight afterwards, to undo the result of your vote.

But will that happen? If the Scots have a vote for independence one week and it succeeds, it's unlikely that a vote the following week to rejoin the union will also succeed.

And Mrs Smith down the road wants a vote on restricting immigration. But Mr Cartwright over the road wants one that relaxes restrictions on immigration.

yeah, but see above comment - will both votes succeed?

Just how many votes will we be required to cast. And how often?

How much democracy can you handle?

This is a work in progress, but it's a theme being followed by many. There's no reason technology can't bring democracy closer to the people.

And if people get a taste for direct democracy do you think they will want more than a vote every five years and the occasional EU referendum - or just think "no let our corrupt representatives carry on"?

Politicians spend a lot of time learning about the subjects they're voting on ...

I suspect a lot of people would be shocked by how little many MPs know about the subjects they're voting on. There was a documentary I saw some time back that asked a number of MPs what they understood to be the difference between the national debt and the budget deficit. Most evaded the question because they obviously didn't know. And these are the "experts" that decide the nations future!

at least the good ones do ...
granted, there are some very good elected representatives

which is not practical for the general public.
We don't all have to be experts on every subject. In fact "the wisdom of crowds" has shown that the public are quite capable of making better decisions than experts.

It doesn't take many "experts" in our current system, influenced by lobbyists and powerful outsiders, to screw up our economy.

Wow, that's an easy one to answer. Get rid of all the Parasites who inhabit the House of Parliament, 650 scroungers. Most would not recognise a days work if they stumbled over it barefooted.

So some of them have just been elected for the first time. Are they all totally bad already? Just because they got elected?
