So when someone claims that you don't need a rubber in the tap and you know for a fact that this is rubbish, you bite your tongue?

They are probably talking about ceramic disc taps.

Not every opinion is equal though is it. Some people's opinions carry more weight on some subjects than others. Why do you think that is?

That's a subjective opinion.

Some people claim that they have evidence that the Earth is only 6000 years old, despite the completely overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

They still claim the evidence supports their position. At what point can I point a finger and laugh?

What overwhelming evidence can you present which proves beyond all doubt that the earth is over 6000 years old?

Bare in mind that the people with this belief think God created it, and even humans can give something new the appearance of age.

You can point and laugh at anyone you like but it's a childish thing to do.

Not just by both but those others in the debate also. It depends on the evidence and how it's presented and perceived by others also. If you present google 'evidence' that dragon slayers once existed simply because you read it in a book or online and read it as evidence, then calling that person an idiot or some such would be apt.

Like this website.

St George the Dragon Slayer.

Are you claiming that St George wasn't a Dragon Slayer.

Is it also apt to call theists, idiots? They belief in the existence of something less likley than dragons.

You don't even have to Google the answer to that ... just go and chip a fossilised sea shell out of some rocks in Derbyshire, then look around you and try to imagine at what point the hill you're standing on was once at the bottom of an ocean.

Whose opinion carries more weight in a discussion about what might have caused an allergic reaction: an immunologist's or a bus driver's?

I can never prove beyond all doubt, because that's not how evidence works; there's always a probability that an effect is due to chance and not to the action of treatment x, but in most cases keeping that probability to less than 1% is good enough.

If you presented a solid body of valid, reliable, peer-reviewed supporting evidence published in reputable journals I'd happily acknowledge the efficacy of the daffodil-arse interaction in the treatment of the common cold. If your best evidence is 'it worked for my mate Bob after he handed over £150 to his naturopath' then I'd be equally happy to dismiss it as rubbish.

Experience lies. Perception is misleading. The placebo effect really does work and, in some circumstances, is very useful indeed.

I could make you swear black is white, utterly convince you that you've watched a light move on a wall in a darkened room, show you a demon's face peeking out of the trees as we drive past a woody hollow, demonstrate that an ouija board really works, convince you that the bloke who stole your wallet had blonde hair and blue eyes, and point you in the direction of someone who will talk to your dead relatives. Your own personal experience will make all those observations undeniable. You'd be wrong, of course, and, being an open-minded sort of chap, you'd probably acknowledge as such once you'd examined the evidence.

So your mind is closed to the possibility that a daffodils in your arse cure a cold, ouija board really works, demon's and God exist, until someone presents a solid body of valid, reliable, peer-reviewed supporting evidence and as it published in reputable journals.

You don't think it possible that God put it there or flooded the earth 4363 years ago, 1656 years after creating it? ;)

The person that had the allergic reaction.

Are you claiming he slayed dragons?

Historical records claim that he slayed dragons along with many other historical dragon slayers. Are you claiming that something that fits the description of a dragon couldn't have existed?
